that crowd doesn't really exist.   I mean technically I guess there are some but it is too small of a number to even care about.

reality is, there was virtually zero blow back big picture when we signed Reid.

yeah, anyone else consider that strange?  Was it his time out of the game or our definite need at safety?

I expected our fanbase to be filled with the "I'm never supporting that team again" crowd.  But as you pointed out, very little blowback.

An extension won't get done until the last quarter of the season, at the earliest. He has been excellent for us so far and I sure would like to see him in a Panthers jersey for the next few years, but...

We need a bigger set of games to judge his overall performance on before we can make a good offer. Also, Reid will be looking for a big paycheck after such a play. If he makes a few more of those, he'll be able to command it here and on the open market, if not then we can look at more reasonable pay levels.

The difference could be a few million a year either way, so it is best to wait until closer to season end. Other teams can't make him an offer until the season is finished anyway, so let's see what happens.

Buying today, though, is buying high and selling low. Best to get something in the middle that suits both parties involved.

What motivation would he have to sign a deal right now?

It would likely be incentive laden, or a low ball offer...seeing as we don't have much cap space.

The smart thing for him is to continue to play well, and bet on himself staying healthy...then hit free agency.

Also, like I keep telling people we gotta move on from Captain, and lock down Bradberry which isn't going to be cheap.

P.S. we need to hope that Corn is legit

there were a few people after we signed him who clearly had political motivations but were converting it to blasting his play for the first few weeks. there was a thread they bumped for the first 3 or so weeks about how garbage he was on the field and that we needed to cut him. they stopped bumping that thread a few weeks ago for some reason :D

big picture though we need to actually draft a talented saftey, though.    We can extend Reid.  But we still need to get young talent.  We have been depending on old vets for far too long.  Gotta stop.

he's only 26, he could start for us for 5-7 years comfortably. draft a FS but no need to worry about Reid's replacement if we extend him

I really want to see how the rest of the season progresses.  Like how well does he play versus the Saints...  Since those are going to be our biggest hurdle to winning the NFC South and possibly the rest of the NFC.

I've been pleased with his play, and I hope that he would give Carolina a fair chance when he does go FA.
