Cam hit while sliding, no call

So on the play where Cam slid and came up short of the first it appeared he got nailed by a diving defender as he was going down. Isn’t that an automatic 15 yard penalty? The whole point of the QB being down where he starts the slide is you cannot hit him once he starts that motion. I couldn’t hear the announcers but was this mentioned at all?

This could have changed the course the game so I was pissed but not surprised Cam didn’t get the call.

I thought so too at first, but maybe the guy was already launched into the tackle motion before Cam started to slide. Luckily, no one got hurt.

That is the rule unless the official determines that it is a late slide and the defender had already started to engage the QB.

Well then if it was a “late slide” so that he doesn’t get the benefit of the slide “protection”, then why isn’t he awarded the full yardage that he gained rather than spotting it where he started the slide.

What Cary is saying, I think, is that if the NFL is going to say “this is where he started to slide so we’re spotting it here”, then the NFL is recognizing that IT WAS A LEGAL SLIDE.

Conversely, if you are going to claim “its not a legal slide, ergo any hit he takes his legal”, then the NFL is recognizing the play as a standard rush and Cam should have been given his FULL gained yardage.

But as we know, because its Cam, the refs give him the worst of both situations.

Agree with others that the officials likely ruled that the defender had already left his feet.

Having said this, Cam isn't going to get much compassion when he showboats and walks into the end zone like he did on Sunday.  I thought that was in very poor taste and the Bucs were almost down for the count and I felt like they came back alive after that moment.  I thought someone was going to try to take Cam's head off for doing that and I'm glad the Bucs didn't go there because many teams/players would have.

What in the world are you saying here? Late slide? Legal slide? is there an illegal slide? There is only one slide. There is no different rendition of the slide.

A slide by definition is when a player voluntarily goes to the ground to stop progress of the play.

When someone says "late slide" they are just referring that the opposing player was already engaged to hit the sliding the player, therefore no penalty when there is contact, unless aiming for the players head or leading with their head.

What I just read above is a very complex thought process that appears to be something you have elected to conjure in your own mind. Maybe you are saying exactly what I just said but man... I have no idea what you are trying to say.

I thought Cam got up mad with himself for sliding too soon and not pushing harder for first down, IMO,

I'm all for Cam staying healthy but was surprised as well that he didn't try harder as he usually does. I assume he thought he was already at/past the marker.

The term late is relative to the actions of the defender. If a defender is already in the process of diving toward the QB when the slide begins then no penalty is called. Oddly, the NFL seems less inclined to recognize the laws of motion when it comes to sacks of QB. If a player launches toward the QB and their full weight lands on the QB, a penalty is called even though complete control of a moving object to toward another potential moving target is impossible.

IMHO, the QB diving rule is correct and the new sack rule is completely unfair.
