Setting up the Turner Okie-Doke

So I just wanted to mention something that some people may have missed and I believe to be a good example of what Norv brings to the OC position that we've been largely missing in the past.

Three different times we were in short goal-to-go situations and three times we ran plays from an identical set.

The first being the Armah touchdown. We set up in an I-formation and motion Manhertz in to lead block for the fullback on the dive. We also pulled a guard to push Armah from behind - genius.

The second time after motioning Manhertz to the same lead block spot they then motion him back to the end of the line and run a HB dive with McCaffrey.

The third time we bootleg Cam out to the weakside off the play fake and there's literally no one within 50 feet of him. Unfortunately this was wiped out by a bullshit illegal motion penalty.

My point is this. While we obviously were trying to score on each attempt, Norv was also using the first two plays to set up the third. This is situational strategic planning. This is what good OCs do. Unfortunately the penalty wiped it out but we still got a touchdown thanks to an amazing grab from Olsen. Regardless, it was amazing to watch after watching Shula seemingly pick plays at random throughout games he called.

Good catch. I'd also like to point out that the Annexation of Puerto Rico was created by Scott Turner. We might not know how much of the creativity on offense is because of the younger Turner.

I'll also point out that we did the same thing with the Moore and Samuel runs. Moore's run was a reverse off a play fake to McCaffrey that went 30 yards. We then ran the same play later , except directionally flipped, and then added an additional wrinkle of a double reverse to Samuel that went for a TD. Both plays caught the Bucs off guard with the later causing them to literally sit back on the heels for about 10 seconds trying to figure out where exactly the ball was. Meanwhile Samuel is accelerating to 20mph before crossing the line of scrimmage according to NextGen stats.

Norv has always been a good play caller, but he's generally been very streaky and then get's conservative with a lead. We've seen a bit of that this year with this team, but his overall play design and game planning for specific weaknesses in a defense is the best I've ever seen from him. We look for this mismatches and just pound them into the dust.
