Cam Newton - Shoulder "Feels Great"

Newton bluntly and succinctly told reporters on Wednesday that his surgically repaired shoulder “feels great.”

But after some soreness cropped up following Newton’s 201-yard, two-touchdown comeback performance against Philadelphia in Week 7, during which he threw 22 of his 39 passes in the fourth quarter, the coaching staff decided to limit Newton for two practices last week. Friday’s rain prevented Newton from getting his full snaps that day, he said.

Newton also opted out of attempting a Hail-Mary pass at the end of Sunday’s first half. Rivera told the Observer in the locker room after the game that after soreness that week, Newton was happy with how his shoulder felt in the first half of the game and didn’t want to risk anything with what would be a 65-yard attempt.

Rivera publicly praised Newton’s decision after the game. He also indicated Wednesday that the Panthers won’t have any problem limiting Newton as needed during the week.

Newton’s situation differs from 2017, when he was limited nearly the entire year after shoulder surgery and couldn’t even throw overhand until late in the preseason.

Newton was able to have an entire training camp and preseason in 2018 and practiced fully for the first seven weeks.

“I think the big plus is (this year) he had OTAs, minicamp and training camp to gel with these guys in the beginning of the season,” Rivera said. “And now I guess we are kind of in the situation where this is our ‘new normal.

I have been impressed with Rodrigue's reporting, I think she's the best Panthers beat writer.  She does a great job asking tough questions but reporting without bias.

That said, I wouldn't expect Cam to say anything but "feels great".

Why would we go for a hail mary in the Raven game instead of the FG? Am I missing something? I think what was called was perfect.

Is Ron suggesting he didn't trust Gano 50+ yards? Even with 5 seconds left we didn't risk giving the Ravens any real shot. Maybe I'm reading that wrong.

In any case, as much as a competitor as Cam is, I don't trust what he's saying so I hope he really is 100%.

Wind on the field goal and I look at Cam not wanting to throw the hail Mary more of a preventative measure more than him not being able to do it. If game on the line I think he does it

Only thing that confuses me on that play is why Heinicke had to come in and throw to Olsen instead of Cam?

The cameras showed Rivera conferring with Chase Blackburn prior to bringing Heineke into the game.  Rivera makes the decision, but I think he pretty much bases those on what Blackburn tells him. Prior to Gano hitting the 63 yarder, Blackburn told Rivera he was good for 65 yards.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
