Should we trade for Calais Campbell?

What part of after the suspension don’t you understand. All he had to do was act semi-normal in DALLAS. He got his second chance. And blew it.

Someone else’s turn to talk to “white noise”. I took my shift

So he partied hardy (pun intended) in Big D?  So what!  The team was a circus and had no wind or direction.  He still lead them to a top 10 D.

That has zero bearing on the Carolina Panthers and the 4+1 years here that landed him the tag, and the exemplary athlete and human being he’s been the last two years.

The difference between trading for Allen & now trading for Campbell is Allen knew he was at the end of his career & wanted to play for a Super Bowl contender. Thus, he requested a trade from the Bears & Gettleman loves to use former pro-bowlers/1st rounders for a season or two. Plus, he was going to be cheap (only cost us a little less than a Mil).

On the other hand, Campbell is still in his prime & could very well last for many more seasons. He has no reason to want out of Jacksonville, at least not yet. He has more time to spare than Allen did, & the Jags could still be Super Bowl contenders. Plus, i'm not sure if we have the money to pay for him. If we're going to trade for a DE, it would have to be someone cheap and/or still on their rookie contract. Just like what the 'Aints did with Eli Apple.

I like the idea, but it ain't gonna happen. Someone like Dante Fowler Jr might work though. He's on his last year & so we could use him as a one-year rental.

Campbell is 32 years old...he might have a few years left maybe but he's on the last leg of his career...he isn't Peppers who's a freak lasting this long at his age.  Look at what happened to CJ after 30.  Granted the leg whip that took him down a few years ago didn't help...but he fell off a cliff, who's to say Campbell won't do that in a year or two?

He played organized football this year for Richmond.  He is a genetic freak and has kept in phenomenal shape.  He would be the second best player on this defense on Sunday if given a uniform.

31 other teams have passed on him for a reason.

His ship has sailed for the nfl after he was in Dallas

Jared Allen was 33 or 34 I think when he was here

Yeah because their team didn’t have a rapport with him and his name is synonymous with evil because of the timing of the Rice video and the desperate need to find another villain immediately.

Also, because the other 31 have invested draft or free agent capital in the defensive end position in a way the Carolina Panthers have not.

We were also told after a Salt Lake Screaming Eagles online poll ended in a dead heat photo finish with slightly more no votes to sign him that he would never play organized football again.  He was humble and committed enough to play in the Spring League and with Richmond however, being the great teammate he was here which landed him the franchise tag after 4 years and had RR and TD lauding his praises and begging our hypocritical, creepy, ex-owner for his return.

Dave Tepper supposedly has brass balls and supposedly wants to win a Super Bowl.

32 teams also passed on a REAL criminal (FELON) Tyreek Hill 4/5 tines too.

I'm not a big fan of trading assets for the right to pay an older player, who will probably start decling soon, big money.

His salary for the next three years is $15m, $12m, $15m.  Like others have said would be responsible for the entire $15 this year.

https://overthecap.com/player/calais-campbell/385/

If he was younger and was due $10 million each year for the next 3 that would be different.

People always forget that you don't trade for players you trade for their contracts.  His value isn't just determined by his play on the field but the type of salary you incur.

It just all depends on what it would take to get him.

On the flip side there would be no guaranteed money so you could make the argument that you could you pay him $7m this year and $12m next year and if he starts to decline you could release him before the $15m year.

If this is Peppers last year it could be a good bridge until we develop some younger players.  We definitely need to look at drafting some this next offseason.
