Panthers’ Offseason Moves 2019

Recommended Posts

Finally I can start my own thread! This is something I know is premature but I would very much like to discuss. What are our biggest needs and how should we approach fixing them?

Put on your armchair GM hat and get to work.

Job #1

Rank the Panthers’ needs in order of biggest concern to least.

Job #2

You have 28 players that will become free agents in the 2019 market what will you do? ***the number is their age***

Ryan Kalil / C / 34

Thomas Davis / OLB / 36

Julius Pepper / DE / 39

Mike Adams / FS / 38

CJ Anderson / RB / 28

Marshall Newhouse / RT / 30

Eric Reid / SS / 27

Devin Funchess / WR / 25

Wes Horton / DE / 29

Fozzy Whitaker / RB / 30

Colin Jones / FS / 30

Kyle Love / DT / 32

Chris Clark / LT / 33

Amini Silatoleu / G / 30

Ben Jacobs / ILB / 31

Daryl Williams / RT / 27

Taylor Heinicke / QB / 26

Chris Manhertz / TE / 27

Damiere Byrd / WR / 26

David Mayo / OLB / 26

Cameron Artis-Payne / RB / 29

Jared Norris / OLB / 26

Bryan Cox Jr. / DE / 25

Efe Obada / DE / 27

Jamaal Jones / WR / 26

Damien Parms / S / 26

Elijah Hood / RB / 23

Adam Bisnowaty / T / 25

Job #3

After resigning these players what other free agents would you target to fill our needs?

Job #4

Now how would you spend each draft pick that we currently have? Maybe not a specific player but at least what position.

without going too indepth.  I move on from every player 36 and older.

I get a legit DE and S

This.

We've gotta get a pass rusher.  Hurney's been solid at finding DEs for the most part (Peppers, Hardy, Johnson... even Frank was good, he just couldn't stop smoking weed).  Then again he also drafted Everette Brown sooooo

I might change that to 33 and over.

I almost did.  But then I thought about Kalil and I would still likely take him back one more year if he would play.   Cam's comments about all that Kalil does for him factored.

Biggest need is DE, S, and CB.

Here's what I do:

Ryan Kalil / C / 34 - Retire

Thomas Davis / OLB / 36 - I'd bring him back honestly.

Julius Pepper / DE / 39 - Retire

Mike Adams / FS / 38 - Retire

CJ Anderson / RB / 28 - Bye

Marshall Newhouse / RT / 30 - Bye

Eric Reid / SS / 27 - Hold off until end of year, see how things go. If he sucks, Bye, if he's good, Sign him long term

Devin Funchess / WR / 25 - Bye - Solid #2 but we have other guys who are more explosive that I want to see play.

Wes Horton / DE / 29 - Re-sign for a 2 year, team friendly deal

Fozzy Whitaker / RB / 30 - Bye

Colin Jones / FS / 30 - STer and nothing more. Won't kill us to keep him as a ST guy. Should NOT start though

Kyle Love / DT / 32 - Re-sign if he wants. 2 year team friendly deal. Love is love

Chris Clark / LT / 33 - Bye

Amini Silatoleu / G / 30 - Bye Bye Bye

Ben Jacobs / ILB / 31 - Bye

Daryl Williams / RT / 27 - Re-sign with money saved from old guys retiring.

Taylor Heinicke / QB / 26 - Camp battle

Chris Manhertz / TE / 27 Camp Battle

Damiere Byrd / WR / 26  - Bye

David Mayo / OLB / 26 - Depth contract but he'll get more on FA market.  - Bye

Cameron Artis-Payne / RB / 29 - Bye

Jared Norris / OLB / 26- another solid ST guys that I'd keep

Bryan Cox Jr. / DE / 25  - Camp contract

Efe Obada / DE / 27 - Camp contract

Jamaal Jones / WR / 26 - Bye

Damien Parms / S / 26 - Bye

Elijah Hood / RB / 23 - Bye

Adam Bisnowaty / T / 25 - Bye

Not Listed:

Matt Kalil / LT / Old enough  - Bye. Eat that horrible contract and designate a June 1st cut.

Target:

Mid round lanky possession receiver to replace Funchess

Clowney

FA Safety

Draft:

Safety early.

DE early

CB eventually as well.

Profit

I think we re sign Daryl Williams assuming his knee checks out. There just aren’t any tackles worth a damn out there in next years FA class. We move Moton over to LT and cut ties with Kalil.

I’d bring back Thomas Davis for as long as he wants to play. He’s much better in coverage than Shaq is which is quite sad.

It’s really going to come down to the wire for me with the Funchess debate. I think a lot will depend on the type of money he’s looking for and who is willing to pay him what. I’d love to replace Torrey Smith with one of my favorite veteran WR’s in Golden Tate. Tyrell Williams is also a FA and could potentially replace Funchess. As much as we need a safety and a DE, keep in mind this league is favoring the offenses more and more each year, we need to be able to score!

Clowney is obviously the big market defensive end available. Would be nice to grab him but there’s also some top tier safety’s available in Lamarcus Joyner, Earl Thomas, Clinton Dix and Landon Collins. Hopefully Reid plays well enough over the rest of the season and signs a respectable long term deal so we can finally focus on the free safety position.

There’s potential for a ton of turnaround this upcoming offseason and that’s not a bad thing. With expiring contracts and the help of 2 post June 1st cuts, the Panthers could potentially have a fair amount of cap space.

The Panthers biggest need are at DE, OT, OLB, Nickel, and S

I would  keep Newhouse, Reid, and Byrd. I would also try to keep Funchess and Daryl Williams but the money has to be right.

I would go after Clowney and Landon Collins. Peppers is 38 and Addison is going to be 32. Team needs a premium pass rusher on the edge. They can't wait another offseason to address this. Landon Collins will finally be the longterm fill in at SS after having a revolving door at the position. Great in stopping the run and has really improved in pass coverage. I like the combination of Collins and Reid in the backfield with Gaulden rotating in at both Safety spots and playing Big Nickel.

Depending on who we resign or acquire in FA will impact the draft of course. However, I would still go DE in the 1st round even if they sign Clowney, Fowler, etc. In our division, we need a good rotation.

2nd round- target an OT if we are unable to resign Daryl Williams. Chris Clark and Matt Kalil are not long term answers.

3rd round- target an OLB. If TD is gone, Mayo will be in the lineup. I like Mayo but he is MLB and special teams ace.

3rd round comp- target a CB that can also play in the slot. Again in our division its important that we have 3 CBs that we can rely on. Captain Munnerlyn is a liability and we are seeing more teams put their best WR in the slot at times to get a good matchup.

I have to see who is available in free agency and who we actually lose or extend, and, as always, a lot of this depends upon the specifics of the draft, but from a simplistic perspective, I'd say DE or OT is the top priority. After DE,  then DB (which is a damned shame considering how much draft capital has been spent on the defensive backfield the last few years).

Very premature, but I’d start fresh with the de, everyone can go expect obada and Cox, I’d either make a run for the best de on the market, which could be clowney or Lawrence, then draft a de in the first(or trade up depending on how far Bosa falls). Safety market is plentiful and those guys aren’t getting paid much but I’d rather just grab one in the second, follow the third up with o linemen and a dt. Sign Williams back, If Funchess wants big money id let him walk or seek an upgrade, Reid has always proven at worst he’s good depth and a more athletic Adams, so at least sign him back for another year. It’s also maybe time to consider spending another high pick on lb.

Ryan Kalil- retire

Matt- June 1st cut

Cut- Torrey Smith

Cut- Captain Munnerlyn.

TD- vet min contract

Williams- resign (shouldnt cost near as much as pre injury.  Only 1 big year, and coming off big knee injury drops his price tag)

Funch- only resign if hometown discount, Moore and Samuel are our future 1 and 2 awith Byrd potential as 3.  So not a major need to throw big $$ at.

Sign Honey Badger- deep safety market, value f9r that position is cheap at this time as well

Sign Josh Norman- its going to happen

Draft:

1st: Montez Sweat- this years Marcus Davenport.  Depth at other positions push him down.  Rivera runs the defense based on the DL creating pressure. But they cant create pressure now though

2nd (trade up in 2nd via comp 3rd): Michael Dieter- Must Replace Ryan Kalil
