What is wrong with Kawan Short?

Not necessarily always true. Ron took a shot at PFF ratings himself last week. The problem I have with PFF is that they try to review every player on every play and without definitively knowing the play call that's pretty much impossible. They have to infer about that very critical piece of information.

Oh I get it. But...PFF has got to be more reliable than the average Huddler. Right?

I heard Ron saying that about PFF. But what he said about Poe helping KK was all Ron.

Coaches see the whole process, fans just see the results. The results from the DT position simply haven't been there. It's why Star was always underappreciated. He wasn't a playmaker, but he was a great facilitator. He ate uonsoace and occupied blocks which allowed others to make the plays and rack up the stats.

It should be noted that Short had two TFL yesterday.

I mean, KK is our highest rated DT. He must be doing something right. Right?

Who do I believe. PFF, or the Huddle. Cuz one of them is wrong.

I mean I understand what you are getting at which is why I was glad to find someone with all 22 footage that I could actually post to the huddle to show people what I have been noticing on much more than just a few occasions. These were snaps from the most critical point in the entire game and Short was an absolute non factor.

Also until PFF reveals their grading formula or shows some video evidence with examples to explain their grades I am going to take the grades with a grain of salt. I am not a football expert but I am able to watch games and all 22 tape and have enough knowledge to determine whether a players is playing well or not.

On the series before that, when the Iggles went 3 and out. Short was the one who dropped the RB for a 3 yards loss. Making it 3rd and long. Which, obviously, they missed.

Also, picking 2 plays, out of a game full, to make a point is not really fair. I haven't rewatched the game yet. But he was getting penetration quite a bit. In fact, even Davis commented on how often Poe, and KK we in the backfield. Saying they were a good compliment to each other.

All I said was, PFF says KK is our highest rated DT. The Huddle says he sucks. One of them is wrong. One of them at least evaluates players for a living. While the other...not so much.

If you read the op, you would have seen where I said he has been terrible on passing downs but still doing alright against the run. I also said this was his best showing since the Dallas game.

I used two plays because I can’t post things here from game pass and those two plays were the two most critical plays of the game. You would think Short would be going all out in that situation and instead he was a complete non factor. That to me is pretty alarming.

Get game pass and go back and watch the games. You will see I’m not pulling stuff out of my ass. Shorts lack of a pass rush is a serious concern that is clearly affecting the defensive line.

I honestly can't get a read on you sometimes man and I mean that with all due respect.

Sometimes you say coaches see the whole process and fans see the results but have bunch a critical pov for our coaches.

I'd argue that today was one of our most well coached games, we held the eagles to 17 points, we adjusted well when we were getting beat, and cleaned up most of our errors and absolutely exploited the Eagles weaknesses, yet you still say that Cam saved us.

I dunno man, I guess part of the fun of discussing football is discussing difficulties but I cannot get a grasp on where you stand.

Just because the coaches see the whole process doesn't make them infallible.

Short is 29. Turns 30 in Feb. He's the same age Charles Johnson was when he took a big step backwards. Not saying there is a correlation, I'm just mentioning it. I think we should really be wondering when Vernon Butler is going to live up to his first round pick status.

Hes signed until he's 33. There are no more big money contracts in Short's future. Honestly though, I wouldn't be surprised if next season is his last in Charlotte. We can save $10M in cap space by cutting him after next season. If he's no longer a high impact player I'm not sure that we can justify his $18M cap hit. Either way, I very seriously doubt he'll see the final year of his contract even if we keep him through two more seasons. We could save $14.5M (vs. an $18.5M cap hit) by releasing him prior to his final season.

Do you really want Vernon Butler taking his snaps?

Butler may not make the team next year. The odds of us picking up his 5th year option are practically zero. The upcoming draft is very strong at DL. I won't be surprised if we go DE/DT or vice versa in the 1st/2nd.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
