Fox: Delhomme hasn't changed

From Steve Reed: Fox sees no difference in Delhomme's play

Carolina Panthers coach John Fox made it pretty clear he’s not worried about quarterback Jake Delhomme, even though he’s tied for the league lead in interceptions with 10.

When asked if Delhomme is doing anything different than in the past, Fox replied, “Probably no different than any other year. No different than maybe after our first game this year when everybody wanted to pin the Philly loss on him. Probably no different than when we were sitting at 0-3. As a football team - not just one guy - I don't think any of us were very good. I don't think me as the head coach was very good. I think top to bottom that was the deal.

“I think over the last three weeks, and I'm counting the bye week as one of those, guys have worked very hard. A week ago, there was some (people) disgruntled over our run game. Guys worked hard, responded well and we got that working. This is a tough game played by tough people. You keep working until you get better. I don't think the passing game rests on one guy's shoulders.”

Delhomme will start this week against Buffalo and Fox said he's not worried about the veteran's confidence level.

“He's had enough good things happen for us to be 2-3,” Fox said. “There is not a guy out here that does this for a living that doesn't have to have extreme confidence. I don't really worry about his confidence. I think results help earn confidence, and we're working on getting better results. Again, it's not just one guy.”

Fox also said Delhomme’s numbers past week – 9 of 17 for 65 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown – don’t concern him either.

“Not when you run it for 267 (yards),” Fox said. “If you only had 55 yards total offense, that would be a concern, yes. But to score 28 points is enough to win in this league on a consistent basis. Had we done that consistently, our record would be different. I tend to try to find the positives rather than the negatives. I don't have my head in the sand. We've got work to do. They (players) don't have their head in the sand. We understand that.”

So, he's not concerned with Delhomme as long as the rest of the team picks up his slack. What a great attitude to have about the supposed leader on offense. "You can suck as much as you want, as long as your teammates bail you out." How inspiring for the rest of the team to know Delhomme is safe as long as the rest of them keep playing well regardless of how he plays.

God I wish you people would Tivo the games and watch them again. It's not all JAKE. Yes he is playing poorly, but the whole passing game is horrible right now. Everyone pins it on the QB because he has the ball, but it's a bunch of moving parts. All the parts aren't moving in the passing game.

Obviously its not all Jake.. But ALOT of it is. How many games you think we're going to win by keeping the ball out of the QB's hands? They obviously said "Ok we can't afford a sack and a fumble or a int, lets keep this game out of his hands."

People on this board suffer from poor reading comprehension skills, and wouldn't be happy unless Fox came out and said "Jake sucks, we're cutting him, and we're sorry we ever signed his sorry ass."

This part:

Gosh, Fox says Jake isn't doing anything particularly different from last year except for in the Philadelphia game, and the whole team isn't playing very well. Read it another way, "Jake isn't playing different, but he's not playing well just like the entire team." It's EVERYONE, not just one guy.

Fox never publicly calls out his guys. That's not enough for the negative people in this thread. But he's gotten a lot more wins than they have, and will likely be in a position to get a lot more after this year is long gone.

    • See, there's this whole thing about get your "Franchise" QB and you're golden. Except, well, it's crap. Look at the Jets, year after year, trying to draft that dude, never hitting. Then they go out and wrangle Aaron Rogers. And they're still crap. Why?  Because they haven't built a team. Their o-line is suspect, their defense is leaky.  A QB isn't the answer, until you've got the rest of your units up to at least middle of the pack quality.  Think about how long it took us to get right after drafting Cam. Phenomenal talent, impactful player, still took four years of team building before he took off. And on the other side, if you build a strong pair of O and D lines, then work hard at developing your skill players, someone like Jared Goff or Sam Darnold can come in and have success. Brock Purdy can get you to the Super Bowl. Trying to find your "franchise" QB at the top of the draft isn't a luxury pick, it's most often a wasteful pick. Get you the best d-lineman, tackle or linebacker in the draft.
    • I like Landon a lot, I believe he is going to be a beast at the next level and can, more than likely, get him in later rounds.
