Upon further review...

Rewatched the game on NFL Gamepass coach's film, concentrated on the defense. Here are my takeaways after watching much more closely. 

 

- The lack of pressure was for the most part due to the quick throws. Plenty of times our guys would have got there if the ball wasn't out within a couple seconds. 

- OBJ and Shepard are the perfect receiving duos for the dink and dunk offense the Giants run. So many damn short passes. 

- Poe is out playing Short, and it isn't very close. KK needs to pick his game up. 

- Peppers looks pretty damn good as am occasional 3 tech on passing downs

- I don't know why Munnerlyn is starting over Corn. Captain was a liability out there. At least use the guy with fresh legs. 

- Donte Jackson is looking good, but still a rookie. They took advantage of his inexperience on a few plays. This one stood out to me. Jackson clearly in man coverage, his guy loses him in the crowd. In time I feel Jackson will be our best corner.

We've known the short, quick passes were coming since preseason one. That's definitely not a surprise.

Not sold on Jackson being better than Bradberry. Jackson’s size vs bigger and better competition could be an issue

Yeah, but against the Giants what can you do. If Eli and OBJ are meshing you don't want to press and risk a huge play. Pick your poison and hope for a turnover.

He plays bigger than his size. Case in point is his knock out against Cincy and the interception he just ripped away from ththe receiver.

Off topic, has there been any video to surface yet showing the supposed penalty for holding/illegal contact where the refs decided to pick up the flag?  That was a pivotal no-call.

They're different types of player.

Bradberry is a merry go round, the solid but not spectacular guy who will always do a good job in coverage but might only generate a turnover here or there. And while he may not shut the other team's best receiver completely out, he'll do a whole lot to blunt their impact.

Jackson is a roller coaster. He'll make plenty of spectacular plays. He'll also give plenty of them up. That's just what you get with a player like that. Coaches frequently spend a lot of time trying to get a guy like Jackson to be more careful, but they probably shouldn't. You take that edge away from him and you take away what makes him play well.

(Rivera tried that with Josh Norman and later admitted it was a mistake)

If you want a player comparison, James Bradberry is like Steve Beuerlein. Donte Jackson is like Cam Newton. They can both get the job done. One just does it in a lot more exciting fashion (in both good and bad ways).

Not that I've seen, But the league did state that Landon Collins was improperly penalized on the play that allowed us to continue a pivotal scoring drive.

What scares me about that is that we have more teams on our schedule who can do that same thing, particularly the Saints (twice) and the Falcons.

Plays 10 yards of the line... surprised when the opposing team throws a quick slant. 

I understand the last thing we want to do is give OBJ the ability to run right by us but after he was doing that anyway you would think that maybe we would try to get some hands on him before he got into his route.

That was a freaking damn perfect play design by the Giants to take advantage of a rookie. Wow. Credit to Shurmer and Shula.

Don't forget the Rams in the playoffs, if we are so lucky.

I don't understand us at least not mixing it up a little more on defense.

The blueprint is out there on how to carve up our D. And it doesn't have anything to do with who's the DC. It's an overarching Rivera defensive philosophy. We want a strong front seven and we want to play soft coverage with big cushions in the secondary to keep everything in front  of us to avoid giving up the big play over the top. Quick developing short and intermediate routs are going to be there for opposing offenses. Unfortunately, NFL offenses are evolving to be more and more pass heavy and are increasingly equipped to exploit what our D is willing to give them.

TLDR version: We're using 1980s defensive philosophy in 2018, except now DBs can't be physical with receivers.
