So What Is It Going to Take to Get Torrey Smith Off the Field?

And then you become predictable. And what if you decided to change the play at the LOS, because the defense stacks the box? Now you're stuck with your playmaker on the sideline watching.

If your run game is that reliant on WRs blocking downfield, then you're already in trouble.

That assumes the blocker can't catch the ball and that isn't always the case. If you change the play or go to the hot read then it is up to Cam to find the mismatch or throw into the blitz. But it does put a premium on guys who can do more than one thing. And just the opposite, if you have receivers downfield blocking you are doing a great job and springing backs for big pickups plus your O line is doing a great job as well getting to the second level.

First of all that isn't great logic since we play a different scheme. Not every team requires their receivers to be great blockers so if one guy on one team plays right away on that team it doesn't mean they would be a starter on another team.  I haven't seen Moore block effectively but have seen him wiff on a few and stand around on another. Hard to get a definitive read on so few opportunities. But I know that Norv wants him out there and if he were the best option he would be out there.  He gets what he earns just like everyone else.

Blocking I have seen in yrs past several players that whiffed constantly on blocks and were starters. The so called vets. Tolbert, Dickson, Fozzy, all whiffed consistently and continued to get playing time while others were on the bench. I get u want the rookies to learn but some are good at learning on the fly. I think Moore is one of those candidates his college play speaks for it. He is a baller and play design should work around his limitations to get him on the field not vice versa.

panthers55, I hear what you're saying...

So, if you have an explosive game breaker at receiver that maybe isn't as willing to block as another receiver,  then you go with the other player because his willingness to block fits your scheme? Particularly when the other receiver hasn't done much of anything as a receiver.

It's 2018, not 1978. A receiver that doesn't make receptions should not be starting.

You alter your scheme for your dynamic talents. Not limit your dynamic talent because of your scheme.

Then y did you draft the kid.

Agree. If you needed a polished route runner and willing blocker, then why not go with Ridley? You knew Ridley was willing to block coming from Alabama.

Moore has a higher ceiling than Ridley in my opinion. I can see what Smitty meant when he compared Moore to himself. Moore is out there manhandling cats all over the field. He is stronger than his combine bench says. You get that guy the ball one-on-one and it's almost unfair for a CB.

I have to believe Norv is a good judge of talent and that he won't automatically do what Shula did which is what you are basing your argument on. Unless you believe that Rivera is pulling the strings and making the position grouping decisions rather than Norv and his staff who are actually tasked with that job. I assume that Norv is bringing Moore along and will incorporate him into the offense as his skill set and versatility improve. I also think we picked Moore because of his long term potential more so than what he can today or tomorrow. So I think by the end of the year, Moore will be a bigger part of the offense as will Samuel.  I understand you may be more impatient than I am. But Moore will get there, just not today.....

    • I don't know about you but I have been a life long Chiefs fan for the past 4 years.
    • Sure there's a ton of transplants in Colorado now. But as far as Denver in particular goes the Broncos have also been around for 65 years. Someone moving to Denver is going to be far more likely to become a fan of the Broncos and even attend games versus someone moving to Charlotte and the Panthers. Like I said it's not just one single thing with us it's multiple factors.
    • He's definitely getting better. It's fun to watch.  I've been getting killed for this take, but with the current state of college football, it just takes more time to develop a quarterback. I don't think it's a plug and play position anymore. I'm really not sure if it ever was. NFL offenses have always been substantially more complex than the college game, and the college game has simplified even more in recent years. Many college teams do not have a physical playbook anymore. That's just not the national football league.  Are there freaks who have success from day 1? Yes, without question. But so many of those guys are runners, and so many of those guys tail off. Is Bryce ever going to be Josh Allen? Probably not.  What I am seeing is a guy with complete command of the offense. He's checking into things at the line, making adjustments, and making timely throws.  He goes to David Moore a ton, because Moore is a consistent route runner. Bryce knows where he is and when he should be open. I think the guy with the "super processor" needs to be comfortable in the offense in order to do the "super processing." He doesn't have elite arm talent, and he is small of stature, but if he makes the smart play consistently, and he's willing to throw the ball downfield and not make mistakes, like he's starting to show, he's going to be a starter for a long time in this league, and it's not a position I'd spend draft capital right now.
