Barkley dropped the ball before his first TD

Scoring plays have been reviewed since 2011 Mr Football Historian.  Pay attention.

Again, doesn't matter. Unless one of our guys grabs it and runs it back for a significant gain, thebest we can hope for in that situation is a touchback.

Which is what it should have been (if clearly showing no possession). The NFL admitted the error in 2012:

"Because the video showed that Holliday lost possession of the ball before it broke the plane of the goal line, Boylston should have stopped the game to initiate an instant replay review," the league said in a statement.

"Had that occurred, (referee Alberto) Riveron would have had the indisputable visual evidence necessary to overturn the on-field ruling.

"The result of the play should have been a touchback -- not a touchdown -- with Carolina gaining possession at the 20 yard-line."

Again the gif: it was close so, perhaps I am wrong. Regardless, I would have liked to see something other than a cut away to Beckham (side note: Beckham had to have been the most used word in that broadcast)

They didn't have to. But if the automatic review didn't overturn it, challenging it would have been a waste.

Yeah, that's basically what I was sayin'.   They probably took a cursory look at it, said nothing to see here, and went on.  I would think you wouldn't be allowed to challenge it.

I mean he clearly starts the process of dropping the ball before he crosses the plane but he doesn’t actually drop it from his possession until he crosses the plane.

It’s interesting because once the ball starts moving while in the possession of a runner, the NFL seems to err on the side of loss of possession... But being that Barkley isn’t being tackled and it’s him willingy dropping the ball, I don’t see how you call that unless it’s obvious.

If roles were reversed and that was CMC, you better believe everyone on this site would be saying that’s a TD.

Edit:

After piecing both frames together, he certainly looks like he was in even before he begins to drop it.
