Devin Funchess has been declared “dogsh!t”!

Decided to go back over the past two seasons (16 and 17) and compare a couple number 2's that we know well.

Sanu and Funchess

Sanu:  1,356 yards and 9 TD's.

Funchess:  1,211 yards and 12 TD's.

Hmmm, not too bad...especially considering the difference in offenses that these two teams run.

Now I need to compare the money.

Sanu:  $9.8M against the cap during those two seasons.

Funchess:  $ 2.76M against the cap during those two seasons.

Well crap..let's look at D Jax...I'll use his same two years as well.

D Jackson:  1,673 yards and 7 TD's, while costing I think about $19M agains the cap for Tampa and Was combined.

Funchess isn't the second coming of Jerry Rice, but his value has been great for the Panthers, and we have never heard a peep from him.

Psssssst....anyone know Steve Smiths career yards per game?

Funchess is exactly what we thought he was going to be.  A decent number 2 WR, nothing more, nothing less.  It's one of the reasons we drafted Moore this year.

Which is exactly what he was drafted to be.

I know the team talked up the possibility of him as a number one receiver after they traded Benjamin but I just don't think that was meant to be.

He's not Michael Irvin, but he could be a decent Alvin Harper.

Figured I would add a little more since this thread went real quiet when we started comparing no. 2 WR's.

To date, and there are 12 more games to be played this season, Funchess has 1,869 receiving yards and 18 TD's for the Carolina Panthers for his career.

During all of Hurney's time here, he has drafted exactly 1 WR that has more yards than Funchess for the Panthers.  One.  Brandon LaFell, and he had 13 total TD's during his stint here.

Next best?  Kerry Colbert who had 1,424 receiving yards, and 7 TD's during his time here.

Funchess:  1,869 yards.  18 TD's.

LaFell:  2,385 yards.  13 TD's.

Colbert: 1,424 yards.  7 TD's.

So, if Funchess is able to get 517 more yards before the end of the season, he will have more yards and far more TD's than any wide receiver that Marty Hurney drafted during his entire career as the Panthers General Manager.

Trash I tell ya.

@thefuzz has won this thread, hands down.

Funchess is on pace to have a 1000 yard season (averaging 62 yards per game).  Having said that, I don't like him--and I want to.  Is it that he drops key passes that kill drives?  Is it that he does not run the entire route tree effectively?

I see it this way:  Could Moore, Samuel, and Wright do more with the targets going to Funchess?

I would not mind seeing a mid-season trade to a team suffering from injuries in a playoff run.  Like we did Benjamin. Cut Smith too.  (RADICAL PLAN, but stay with me)-- Sounds crazy, but I have no problem going with Olsen, CMC, Thomas, Moore, Byrd, Samuel,  and Wright.  I think we'd be more explosive.

More than likely, you will see Moore's production increase, and Smith should get better as well.  That will take opportunities away from Funchess.  I think he finishes the year with 800 yards and an agent trying to get top dollar--bye bye.

Yes but Byrd and Samuel is unreliable health wise

He's good against zone coverage or a soft man because he's not a bad route runner and is adept at finding the holes in the defense. His problem is against press man, where you have to just put your head down and run your route as hard as you can to gain separation, then locate and catch the ball at the last second. That last part is really an innate talent that you either have or don't, and Funchess just struggles with it. If he doesn't see Cam throw the ball and track it all the way into his hands, probably not gonna be a catch.

I think I would like Funchess if he caught passes consistently. The thing I dont like in general about our team is we don't have guys who can stretch down the field and this has been apparent ever since Ginn left after the 2016 season.

Right now it looks like Funchess is a mid tier number 2 WR , with everyone else being 3s and 4s until they prove otherwise in a regular season game. I hate the fact that Cam just has never had a complete specimen like Julio Jones, AJ Green, a WR that its tall, can seperate, run great routes, plays agressively, and most importantly has good hands. Like we always have big ass slow dudes who cant catch or small speedy guys who cant catch either or they have injury concerns.

I'm really hoping SOMEONE emerges by the mid point of the season as someone who can take the mantle of number 1 WR, I would love that to be Samuel or Moore , or better yet even both of them. Because then I'd be more accepting of Funchess' role because we'd not be mostly relying on a big dude whose hands and separation arent his forte . If other WRs shine then Funchess is viewed totally differently and its perfectly acceptable for him to be complimentary big guy who catches crucial balls in certain moments and gets a bunch of TDs
