Eric Reid being a distraction

The easy answer is, money.

Would have been expensive to sign him back in free agency. Now we have him pennies on the dollar.

Probably a factor as well. There were rumors he turned down at least one multi year offer to re-sign with the 49ers for a few million per year because he wanted to be in the elite safety category money wise. I also he think he was turning down lower offers to have a better collusion case against the NFL because the start of FA is when he alleges the collusion took place in his grievance. This many months later him taking a 1 year near minimum salary won't hurt his grievance from a perception perspective.

If JR was here Reid would be still on his couch at home out of work. Tepper was a significant part of the deal even though it was Hurney and RR that started it. With Tepper here the Panthers will hopefully get their spot on the map finally and be recognized. I did have it backwards and apologize for it.

Don't doubt that. Richardson never would have gone for Reid. Word was he was the impetus behind Marcus Ball being let go and Tre Boston not being re-signed.

Long as he plays well, kinda doubt it.

There's really only one question I have with regard to the Reid signing. I know Hurney and Rivera say he was the best available safety. And that makes sense.

That said, would someone care to explain to me why he wasn't the "best available player" back when we signed Da'norris Searcy?

I get that the team sale wasn't final back then, but even so, Richardson was on his way out. And even if you cite Richardson as the reason, there was plenty of time during training camp. It's not like Searcy didn't get his first concussion until recently.

Why did it take an injury for this to happen?

I would say Searcy had less injury concern coming in and had been in our system.

And I would say if that's what was believed, it doesn't appear to have been correct.

Mind you, Reid does have a concussion history and he hasn't played yet. Obviously, we're hoping that doesn't show up.

We also have never invested much money in safety as well. One could say we though he would want more than Searcy too.

I appreciate the question but I think you know the answer.

Politics aside, early on this would have definitely been a distraction. You notice I didn’t say he, said it.

Good timing for us.

Tepper may have had a push in the signing because he wants to win.

Not sure about a “push” this early on as an a sole owner but a “yes” and maybe a thumbs up is certain.

We must remember he’s not new to the ownership game.

Yeah I can see us putting out feelers to his agent who said he wanted $6-8M/year on a multi year deal and Hurney just said “welp we’ll go with Searcy for 1 year, $3M”

Ball was let go because he sucked.  We signed him to the practice squad after he alleged to be cut for an Anthem gesture. He was let go by SF and Jags within that season too. Hes been in Canada since.

The Boston timeline makes no sense either. He was a Charger last season. We signed Torrey Smith during the only time period possible for him to be resigned. They cut him because the coaches didnt want him.

Money. Can't imagine Reid would have accepted much less than 5 million per year back in March. We've got him now for a maximum of about 2 mil with the incentives.

Hopefully if he plays well we can sign him for a reasonable price.

Given the situation both monetary and political the time of his acquisition is nearly perfect. They weren't going to sign him in March for what was expected to be a high salary. They went with another veteran who got injured. Then with a need, an owner with a completely different attitude they jumped at a great time.

The only reason to question this is an agenda against a coach.
