Eric Reid Press Conference

Just a quick outside perspective:

I live in DC and spent last night in a sports bar listening to a bunch of Washingtonians grousing that no one in the Carolinas wants to be a Panthers fan after the Eric Reid signing. That North and South Carolinians wouldn't stand for the politics and suspected most would jump ship and finally become Redskins or Cowboys fans.

So what's it gonna be, Huddlers?

Idiots. IMO anyone who'd dump their team because they didn't like one particular player isn't much of a fan and good riddance.

And Redskins or Cowboys? Really? Like you'd just flip a coin?

well it looks like we will be the one to break down the tribal differences of a fan base. I think this is what many owners feared, the fan base breaking up and costing them $$...except for one.

I do think there is more of a history in this area for respecting both sides of this issue, Greensboro for the sit ins for example. The Carolina's may also have the largest black middle class or a certainly a history of black schools. So if your born and raised here, this types of issues are familiar. Also having been redskin/falcon fans before the Panthers is a hard history to deny.

So let's get this ugly, but needed conversation done for more than just Panther fans or the current white house occupant but for all fans that have been forced to take a side - we may lose some fans but will gain others.

He's my question to those players that want to see change for their fellow black citizens. If the working group looking into social justice is not satisfactory , I would like to hear what is...

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000909734/article/nfl-launches-campaign-to-build-on-commitment-to-social-justice

or are there changes to the NFL backed program that would make acceptable? I think many would support a well thought out answer to the social injustice you want to fix.

So Mr Reid, welcome aboard. Not all panther fans will be happy with your politics but politics is something we do constantly. Many of us need to know what is it you want, although some of us will never care what it is. You have arrived in a place that's steeped in the military including your coach, and understand your right to not to stand for the anthem  (which I support), but I would add- if you did stand, it would have special meaning to those fans that are not sure of your intentions, but it's your decision.

So Panther fans , let's grind out this national argument with the best of intentions and seek an answer that 31 other teams were too afraid to take on...

We are the Carolina Panthers, and we may argue among ourselves but someone getting a POUNDING this Sunday and we'll see if we're not all together on that.....

I live just outside of Charleston, SC and I'm well known among my friends as a total Panthers homer. No one has said anything to me about the signing. It hasn't come up on the local sports talk radio (but honestly they'd rather talk about USC/Clemson lacrosse than the NFL). I think it flew under the radar a bit while everyone was losing their minds over the Supreme Court confirmation stuff. Maybe now I'll start seeing it.

I think it will start to get hyped up as the weekend approaches. I think they'll try to play up the "will he/won't he" angle right up until the Anthem. I hope I'm wrong, and people would just drop it.

I wish he'd just kneel, and then no one paid attention, gave a crap, or raised a stink about it.

But not getting my hopes up about that one.

I had a doc appointment last Friday and I wore a Panthers shirt (ok, and a hat).  Someone asked me if I thought the Panthers would be any good this year..  An older guy, probably hasn't been watching.  I told him we were 2-1, and that we just signed a guy who is really gonna help the team.  Some older lady overheard the conversation and yelled "Yea! If he can get up off his knees!"  So that was fun.

I know a lot of Panthers fans, mostly conservative, and I've not heard anyone mention giving a crap about this beyond the football impact it will have. I know some would love for this to turn into a big ruckus and for the stadium to be empty of anyone who isn't a left winger but I've not seen any indication that's going to be the case.
