You know who isn't getting enough credit? Marty Hurney

So far so good.

however .5 seasons doesn’t say as much as 10+ seasons.I assume those who are so quick to love Hurney are new, post-Can fans.

Those unwilling to praise Hurney are reserved until more work is done and for good reason. Don’t know how that’s not clear to some people.

Was Jerry's yes man for years. Now Hurney can build the team he needs without JR telling him.

I think this is true--no more evidence is needed than the year we had a ton of cap room and used it to  re-sign (over-payments at the time for Johnson, Godfrey, Williams, Stewart) our veterans from teams that went 4-12, 6-10.  Fox was left out of the draft--and I watched him speak critically of Clausen and Armanti at camp.

I am fairly sure that JR did not want a black QB when we drafted Cam--even though we had Peete for a while. I think (Based on inferential evidences) that we wanted Marcel Darius (who went to Buffalo, I think) but Rivera pushed for Cam.  I did not want Cam either, (I caught hell and have mended my ways) but I sensed the franchise Black QB from a man who played with Unitas was a reach.  I am guessing RR warmed him to the idea, but JR's first comments to Cam were about Tatoos, if you recall--interestingly weird, but not from someone from the white NFL of the 1950s.  There I recall some debate between RR and Marty about the two players--RR begging for Cam, Marty not so interested at first.  That may suggest JR's pull on Marty.

I made a recent post about Marty--I was sick when we re-signed him.  However, in the early goings, he is doing fine.  When his job is on the line, will he start trading future first rounders again?  We shall see.  But for now, I  give him an A.

The ONLY, SINGLE reason Cam was taken #1 overall is the same year a rookie salary cap was put in place. And that holds true for any team that would have drafted him in the first round (not saying JR wouldn’t have drafted him for your reasons stated).

Cam had one great college year and was raw as hell. Very few teams would’ve signed a risk like that on a Bradford type deal out of the gate.

Gabbert isn’t a bad QB, but lucky for us we got the best QB in that draft, and the cap made that risk possible more than any other influence.

I’ll say a good word about MH as soon as he puts a Lombardi in the case.  Till then he’s still the shitstack that put us thru a rollercoaster existence only to be fired after ruining the cap.

When I’ve forgotten about the Fua’s, the Armanti’s, the Otah’s, the FAs we never got, watching Pep walk, 1st round picks traded when those were his only good picks, then I’ll speak favorably his name.

You know what?

fug it

fug him

and fug you too if you got a problem with it.

The lifeblood of the Panthers is their defensive front seven, QB, running backs and tight ends. That's where their money is invested. Most everything else has been a fungible resource for this organization. Smitty was the exception to the rule. I'd expect this to continue as long as Hurney and Rivera are here. It's a formula that has worked to reasonably good success for quite some time.

So, I'm not upset that Torrey Smith hasn't gotten that many touches or that DJ Moore is not in the running for ROY. I would fully expect that Smith is allowed to move on at the end of the year for this very reason and would not be surprised to see the Panthers let Eric Reid go after the year is up, as well, if he asks for more money than the Panthers want to invest in that position.

Hurney is running the same playbook he has always had, it's just that he hasn't been as reactionary as he used to be...yet.

I know we've all been (rightly) beating up on Torrey Smith for his failures on the field, and thus we might want to hold that against Hurney . . . however . . . consider the other end of that deal.  Hurney managed to dump Daryl Worley before he imploded completely.  No, Torrey hasn't been wonderful, but he played at least some part in bringing Eric Reid to us.  It's also fair to question whether he would have gotten as many opportunities had Samuel / Byrd been healthy.

I'm actually becoming a believer in Hurney 2.0 . . . I think it's possible he is figuring it out.

Reid had options...and I bet Torrey and Reid spoke before Reid made his decision.  I doubt Torrey swayed RR, Hurney or anybody here, but I bet he made Reid feel more welcome.

Panthers could definitely win the Superbowl, not just because they are a talented team but because of the disasters and sports championships correlation. Look it up.

NFL loves a good storyline.    So far we have the hurricane and Obada's story playing in our favor.      Signing Reid though may lose us some points.

The whole ordeal that led to his return was rather bizarre, but Hurney has been surprisingly steady overall. I don't know if he's the right guy long term, but if we make a playoff run I'm good with him.

Also, just of note. At the time I was a little annoyed, but looking back, the fact that we got a 3rd rounder for Kelvin Benjamin is practically robbery at this point.

Getting a 3rd for Kelvin may equal the robbery of Olsen from the Bears for a 3rd.
