Steve Smith has no apologies-- and he shouldnt.

Panthers receiver Steve Smith said Wednesday he stands by the comments he made after Sunday's victory in Tampa Bay. He also said he's ready to move on.

Smith, after catching one pass for four yards against the Bucs, said Sunday he was "no longer an asset" to the Panthers.

"Am I going to go back and apologize for what I said? No,” Smith said Wednesday. “That’s how I felt at the moment. I don’t think I was disrespectful. I don’t think I singled out any one particular person. That’s how it was received by the individuals who spoke to me.”

One of those people was quarterback Jake Delhomme.

"Steve and I talked," said Delhomme. "Am I condoning (what he said)? No. But you've got to understand, this is a competitive guy who has a drive and a fire like no other. I get frustrated too. I'm trying to get him the ball because I know what he can with it in his hands."

Said Smith: "I’m here to work, that’s what I’m going to do. If people get frustrated or discouraged about things, it happens. It’s going to happen on a team in Carolina, like it has in the past, or on a team like Arizona, whatever the case may be.

"I want to win, and I want to be involved in a win. And if a person feels like he’s uninvolved, that should be taken in the manner in which it has been said."

Smith is off to his slowest start since he became a starter, with 21 catches for 259 yards and no touchdowns. Delhomme has thrown 10 interceptions (tied for most in the league) this season as the Panthers passing attack has struggled.

"It's new territory for everybody," Smith said. "But new, unforseen territory is an opportunity to grow and find some things out about yourself that you're not used to dealing with." -- David Scott

I stand by my statement that his comment was more about himself and the team in general than it was about any other player or coach.

"It's new territory for everybody," Smith said. "But new, unforseen territory is an opportunity to grow and find some things out about yourself that you're not used to dealing with."

I love this quote and it shows the character that Smith has and the reason so many love him and to see him play. It sounds like Smith has found a new chip to put on his shoulder and hopefully a new fire that has been missing since his suspension last season.

Smith just needs to get open and Jake needs to stop trying to get him the ball when he can't. When those two things happen, the TD to INT ratio will change dramatically. And I'm not talking about getting deep two times a game, because those are low percentage plays for any QB when the defense is getting pressure. I'm talking about short to intermediate routes that move the chains and keep the safeties out of the box.

I think that last quote was directed at the staff. I think he's saying some teams are on to us and some changes are in order. Or am I reading to much into it?

i think hes pissed (and rightfully so), and is talking about several different people, but doesn't care to publicly call them out. all they have to do is "get him the damn ball" and he'll be ok.

2jake, not at all. I love Steve and he is my #1 man to watch, and lot's others too. Man, I hate not seeing him living up to what he can do. The whole team is feeling something they didn't last season that's for sure, I feel it too. I don't know what the magic bullet is, does anyone? I just hope to see him do great because I don't want him moving on from our team.

We can expect more Jake picks as he tries to force the ball to Smitty.

I liked what they did in the Tampa game. Other than the 2 deep shots to Smith they pretty much used Steve as a decoy to free up Moose, the TEs and Deangelo out of the back field. That works for me when defenses are putting 2-3 guys on Smith. Jake has his best games when he spreads the ball around.

    • See, there's this whole thing about get your "Franchise" QB and you're golden. Except, well, it's crap. Look at the Jets, year after year, trying to draft that dude, never hitting. Then they go out and wrangle Aaron Rogers. And they're still crap. Why?  Because they haven't built a team. Their o-line is suspect, their defense is leaky.  A QB isn't the answer, until you've got the rest of your units up to at least middle of the pack quality.  Think about how long it took us to get right after drafting Cam. Phenomenal talent, impactful player, still took four years of team building before he took off. And on the other side, if you build a strong pair of O and D lines, then work hard at developing your skill players, someone like Jared Goff or Sam Darnold can come in and have success. Brock Purdy can get you to the Super Bowl. Trying to find your "franchise" QB at the top of the draft isn't a luxury pick, it's most often a wasteful pick. Get you the best d-lineman, tackle or linebacker in the draft.
    • I like Landon a lot, I believe he is going to be a beast at the next level and can, more than likely, get him in later rounds.
