We don't have the money to pay him.

And we don't have a lot of money invested in the secondary, yet.  But we do have Bradberry coming up very soon, and he won't be cheap.

why don't we ? we have a great deal of players retiring at the end of this season, bradberry isn't going to command alot, regardless of his good play he doesn't have the ints to demand a heffy contract

I do not see the Falcons exploring this option and here is why:

You have to understand that they have 2 starting caliber players playing safety. Regardless of whether they are hurt or not, you have to acknowledge this. Let's say for the sake of the argument, they acquire Thomas. That may help them out this year, but come next season, they will be in a very tough situation with 3 starting caliber safeties on their roster, with the opportunity to play 2 of them. The 3rd guy will be the odd man out with too much talent sitting on the sideline. Do you trade the 3rd safety? why put yourself in that position when you have 2 younger safeties who happen to be pretty decent at their position. The price they would pay for Thomas will not benefit them from him not starting. You stunt the development of one of your younger safeties because of a knee jerk reaction for 1-year. They would not do that.

I will say that we fudged them up because we signed Eric Reid. That would have been a better signing for them as he is a proven veteran who knows that there is no guarantee he would have a spot the next season. The Falcons may need to sign a safety, but not Thomas. They may find another veteran who knows his better days are behind him and would not command a lot of money for this season.

with that being said, I think the idea of trying to start a bidding war as asinine and not very welcoming of a GM unless we are in real pursuit...

Why don't we what?  Have money next year?

Because we overspent on an Olsen extension for past performance.

We have to pay Cam, KK, and Luke over 30% of our cap next year.

We will either have a 14M cap hit for Kalil 2, or at the minimum 7M of dead money on him.

Bradberry will require much more than you are imagining, and we need to start looking at extensions for Shaq.  Also, Cam will need an extension after next season.

might want to do some research. We will have upwards of 40mil in cap space once it is all said and done. We are in a great place.

Olsen got hurt this year and last year, he wont get much at all.

Show me the 40M, and then we can talk.

We will pay Olsen 7M next season, he already signed the (dumb) extension.

Again, I need to see the 40M.

As I broke down in another thread.....

The Panthers have 27.2 of 190mil available next year. This does not include the estimated 11.9 million dollar salary cap increase. That alone is 40mil, plus we will have designated post june 1 cuts, contract restructures, releases and extension that will relieve cap space.

Olsen did not hit his incentives, so 7m is actually fairly modest. Trey Burton is making over 8mil per year, so I wouldn't complain about olsen.

There is your 40m, and I don't think there is much to talk about now.

what are you imagining bradberry getting? over the cap has us at 30 mill before any tough cuts, why are we paying kk or luke?? they still have 2-3 years on there contract, cam is the only one we'd have to worry about

shaq, bradberry, funchess, williams all have had good seasons, but none are going to be commanding big contracts, i'd let all them walk before i over pay, williams is the only guy i'd consider paying a bit more for.

I haven't looked into next years cap as much as I should, that said, I never trust "estimated cap increases"...Marty did that a few years ago, the cap stagnated, and we got burned bad.

My point in all of this, is that we cannot afford an aging, somewhat injury prone safety, that will want to be the top paid safety in the league.  Could we move around enough money to make it happen?  Sure, but that wouldn't be very smart going forward.

In the end, we are looking at eating 7M in cap space for releasing M. Kalil, 7M in cap space for Olsen who has proven now to not be able to stay healthy.  We will need to extend Funchess (likely), and start saving money for Cams extension the following year.

Add in Daryl Williams if we decide to go that route, and any other player/players that we have our eyes on in free agency, plus the rookie class.

Again, I shouldn't use the word "can't" afford him, but should say, shouldn't afford him.

I see James making quite a sum this offseason...think top 5-8 CB money in the league if I had to guess.  Ron will want to keep him.

No way, I have a hard time putting Bradberry in the top 10 cbs, not to mention our scheme is very cb friendly when what we ask our cbs to do. He’s done good so far this year but his overall performance has been up and down since his rookie year. Again lack of ints it’s what’s going to hurt bradberry’s stock

I'm not saying that he is a top 10 corner in the NFL, but I fully expect him to be paid as a top 5-8...just the way it goes.  Then the next year he will drop down some as others get paid, and the following etc...

He's going to get a big paycheck if he stays healthy this season.

That 190M number you are using already includes a 13M increase from 2018.

No, the 190m includes the adjusted rollover from 2018.

They can’t include what has not happened yet. The adjusted cap increase comes from tv ratings and profits from ticket sales, memorabilia etc.

it is estimated to be 11.9m additional to the projected cap.
