Civility -- has it become a lost art?

People need a "cause" to feel valued or purposeful. Sports, Religion, Politics, and Tribes/Family/Royalty have driven this for centuries. At one point politics was viewed as a private club, and hard to get in. Now it is an open forum that people use to support whatever they feel is this week's 'flavor of the month." It's dangerous, and its almost best to leave it be so it becomes unpopular and we move on to something else. However, being connected destroys that option.

That's enough from me about this, back to panthers. Keep pounding.

Nicely stated.  The "being connected" part, or the growth of anti-social media, is the key.

Bear with me in my first post, people.  It's a bye week, so allow me to stray from football for a moment.

I go back to the dinosaur days of opening doors and pulling out chairs for women, dressing for restaurants, saying ma'am and sir, and treating others with the courtesy you'd expect for yourself.  I know the dumbing down of society, over the last decades, has probably eliminated those from our every day life, and I'm not naive enough to think they're coming back.  It's sad, but true, that people aren't very nice to one another any more.

The advent of social media, and its takeover of interpersonal communication, makes public every inane, stupid, and cruel opinion that can be imagined -- and then 'political correctness' (a/k/a cowardice) has expanded to squelch the criticism that used to tamp down this drivel.

These are my general observations.  As it applies to us, on this board, I guess I'm making a plea to all of you, to tone down the insults and snark and the references to the political divisions that harm the country now.  I've only been posting my thoughts and opinions for a few weeks, but I've read the site for many months.  My wish is that all of us reflect (in this off week, when there's not so much new to talk about) over how we could maybe enjoy our time here more, by a little kindness in our language towards each other.

The main reason we're all here is our shared fandom for the Panthers.  Be critical when it's called for, celebrate when they do well, express whatever opinions you've got -- just try to be nicer about it.

That turned into a long rant.  It's over.  GO, Panthers!  Keep Pounding!

Bravo sir

Good try OP.

I blame the Tinderbox.  Like it or not, everything is political and it is good to have a place for those wanting to take their gloves off.

Unfortunately I see it bleeding over here as posters that have divided over there go after each other in the football forum.  A supporter on one side of the political spectrum that may have agreed with a football take from a supporter of "the other side" yet immediately disagree's with that football take when they recognize the poster.

That being said, personal attacks will not be tolerated here and my mention of "political spectrum" was one mention too many.

Keep this about football and the Panthers we love.

These faux appeals to 'civility' are just tiresome. No sincere, intelligent person would create a thread appealing to civility and then equate political correctness to cowardice in the first post.

This thread should be moved to the Tinderbox just like the one that went off the rails the other day, that supposedly inspired this one.

Why are people so afraid of political correctness

Show  the same respect you expect other to show YOU

Don't go out your way to degrade people and expect the highest respect in return

Don't insult people and feel attacked when you get called out for it

These 4 are what the problem is. When someone makes a post/comment they are called stupid or something else just because they don't like it which is what kids do. All of us are adults here (hopefully) and if someone says something it automatically goes to artillery mode from other posters/commenters and the shooting starts. Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill and don't make this all about "YOU" just because you don't like what is commented/posted on here. Many on here hate on the veterans here when a post on Veterans Day( has nothing to do with politics but honors all veterans on this forum for just one day) comes up all hell breaks loose and one day a year will not hurt anyone. Just let the day pass and get back to the normal complain and condemn episodes on what is said everyday afterwards.
