Civility -- has it become a lost art?

The infighting is dumb and should be kept to the Tinderbox, I certainly agree with that. But sports don't exist in some bubble outside of politics and it would be delusional to act like they do.

I just wish that people weren't so hell-bent on bringing politics into EVERYTHING right now. It's grown beyond tiresome. There's no shortage of outlets to discuss politics without bringing them up in every aspect of life.

Politics is entertainment in today’s world. I’ve grown up listening to sports analogies for relatability in conversations. Recently I’ve been hearing political analogies in place of sports analogies.

its concerning , especially when half of them make no fuging sense.

You're right. It's also why so many have blind party/ideological allegiances just like sports fans. It's an offset of humanity's natural tribalistic tendencies in my opinion, but I also think that's one of the greatest values of sports. It gives us a relatively harmless outlet for that tendency to hopefully avoid it in more meaningful matters.

Too many people Care about their team and don't care anything about the dirty players..... and I'm not talking about football.

Bear with me in my first post, people.  It's a bye week, so allow me to stray from football for a moment.

I go back to the dinosaur days of opening doors and pulling out chairs for women, dressing for restaurants, saying ma'am and sir, and treating others with the courtesy you'd expect for yourself.  I know the dumbing down of society, over the last decades, has probably eliminated those from our every day life, and I'm not naive enough to think they're coming back.  It's sad, but true, that people aren't very nice to one another any more.

The advent of social media, and its takeover of interpersonal communication, makes public every inane, stupid, and cruel opinion that can be imagined -- and then 'political correctness' (a/k/a cowardice) has expanded to squelch the criticism that used to tamp down this drivel.

These are my general observations.  As it applies to us, on this board, I guess I'm making a plea to all of you, to tone down the insults and snark and the references to the political divisions that harm the country now.  I've only been posting my thoughts and opinions for a few weeks, but I've read the site for many months.  My wish is that all of us reflect (in this off week, when there's not so much new to talk about) over how we could maybe enjoy our time here more, by a little kindness in our language towards each other.

The main reason we're all here is our shared fandom for the Panthers.  Be critical when it's called for, celebrate when they do well, express whatever opinions you've got -- just try to be nicer about it.

That turned into a long rant.  It's over.  GO, Panthers!  Keep Pounding!

So, basically, you wanted to fire off a political opinion and then ask for civility, on a... Panthers... Message... Board.

People need a "cause" to feel valued or purposeful. Sports, Religion, Politics, and Tribes/Family/Royalty have driven this for centuries. At one point politics was viewed as a private club, and hard to get in. Now it is an open forum that people use to support whatever they feel is this week's 'flavor of the month." It's dangerous, and its almost best to leave it be so it becomes unpopular and we move on to something else. However, being connected destroys that option.

That's enough from me about this, back to panthers. Keep pounding.

Yes. I wish that we could have a collective (as a species) realization that, guess what, life is just not fair, and that's fine. I don't mean that we shouldn't address issues that affect segments of society - compassion is a good thing, but no matter what solutions to problems are implemented, they will inevitably result in new problems of their own. Life will never be just right, unless you make your peace with the fact that it isn't and then it is, if you follow.

What a stupid fuging post. Life was much worse for a lot of people back in your 'dinosaur days.' If you want to go back to that, go jerk off to an episode of Mad Men or something.

Alright, I got to take another stab at this...

I've been on this message board for nearly a decade and not a moment goes by that we don't argue like siblings. It's even worse during the draft process. We disagree all the time on a million different subjects, but that's what this message board is for. We might argue, but we all love and respect each other. We're all Panthers fans. Your account is filled with nothing but posts attacking others, but you come here to talk about political correctness and civility? If you disagree with someone and someone disagrees back, it's not "political correctness" This website clearly isn't for you...

I gave no political opinion, sir.  I only mentioned political opinions in the context that they shouldn't be on a football discussion board.  Believe me, I have them.  They won't come out here, though.  If they were in the tinderbox, or on another site, I could easily avoid them, if I chose.  But when you're reading a thread on a Panther topic, and somebody throws racial or political anger in, it's jarring.  All I was trying to accomplish was to raise that issue.  The backlash is pretty predictable: the poo throwers are quick to comment; the pie servers do it in relative silence.  A microcosm of society today.
