We'll take a cap hit if we do this year.  We'll hold on for just depth purposes

What do you mean by this year? Because he costs no more, cap wise, to cut him immediately after this season? And he costs another 7M next year to keep him. You’re.not seriously suggesting that are you? There’s a reason he’s not playing now and it’s not his knee.

After this season, if we designate Kalil as a post-June 1 cut, we actually get a $1M cap benefit if OverTheCap.com has their figures right.

https://overthecap.com/player/matt-kalil/1793/

Kalil's base salary last season and this season was only $1M.  His base salary jumps to $7M for the 2019 season.  Dead money or not, I think he's more valuable as a post-June 1 cut after this season than keeping him another season and paying him a $7M salary.

No. Just no. That’s not going to happen. He’s gone as soon as the season is over.

I know you said that you've explained it before, but entertain me and do so again, or link it. Since you've proven to be adept at these contractual matters, my ears are piqued.

If we cut him after this season, and designate him as a June 1 cut, he will cost us about 7.35M per season for both the 19 and 20 seasons.  If we don't cut him, he will cost 12.15 against the cap in 19.  So we would essentially "save" 5M or so in 19, but he won't be here.

If we cut him after the 19 season, and designate him as a June 1, he would count about 4.8M against the cap in both the 20 and 21 seasons, but we would "save" almost 12M in 20, and a about 12M in 21.

If he can't play, and doesn't seem that he can, you bite the bullet and cut him after this season....14M in dead money over two years sucks, but we have to get that money off the books for a Cam extension...just rip off the band aid and move on type situation.

So with Moton balling out, what do we do with Williams if he comes back this season, and seasons moving forward?  All-Pro tackles do not grow on trees, but it seems like both Moton and Williams are better suited for RT not LT.  IDK, what do you guys think?  Re-sign Williams and Trade Moton?  See if one of them can play the Left side?  Keep them both for now?

You don't worry about it...it would be a wonderful problem to have.

Williams isn't under contract next season.  If he wants a prove it deal, and wants to stay with us, then let the coaches figure it out...my guess?  He is going to try to parlay that Pro Bowl selection into a long term deal somewhere, and it won't likely be with us if Moton stays healthy.

I dont get why Clark and Van Roten's grades arent higher.

I would look at who they were up against relative to Mr. Moton. I have no idea. Another (speculative!) factor might be that Cam's talent for escapability applies more to the RT position since he can see more or less immediately if Moton gets blown. On the left side he's generally got less advantage over any other QB until the rusher makes contact. At that point he still has a size and quickness advantage and might still wriggle out of the situation, but perhaps not as much of an advantage relative to LT quality?

Most underrated player for us (the one who takes a lot of undeserved criticism from fans) at the most underrated position.

I dont think it was undeserved when he was out injured for huge chunks of the last 2 seasons.  When your pro bowl center cant stay healthy that usually causes problems for your oline.

Of course when hes actually healthy it makes a huge difference.  And also huge thing was getting matt and amini off the line and finally starting moton

My concern is that we see Moton as a RT

They do, as does he. He never played LT until our 3rd pre-season game. Apparently, he wasn't particularly comfortable there. Not surprising given his experience. Dunno if Williams can play LT or not, but one of them will have to move or sit or, in Williams' case, move on. I suspect the coaches expect Matt to play LT next year and Moton to play RT. We'll see what happens. I know he and Williams are bffs, so maybe they can figure it out between them. I sure hope so. I don't want to see Kalil at LT again.

Of course he wasn't as comfortable there given that he's never played the position before. Despite that, he probably played that position in his first outing as well as anyone we've had since Jordan Gross. Fine, let him play out his first season starting at RT (just like Gross did) but bring Williams back and let Moton spend the entire offseason next year focusing 100% on LT.
