Torrey Smith wants Eric Reid on the Panthers

Another reason to sign Eric Reid is that it will help trim some of the fat off this fan base. Some people will be so triggered that they won’t be able to watch the Panthers because of Eric Reid, meanwhile their president takes a big dump all over the flag and democracy.

historically ron rivera does not play young players as soon as they're ready. they need to be forced into action by injury or roster move. maybe gaulden isn't ready and maybe he would be more of a disaster than jones. but i dont think we can just assume that jones is starting strictly because he's the best man for the job. take away injuries and we'd definitely still be starting amini and kalil.

if rivera is saying that and meaning it then i think you should scream that sort of thing from the mountaintops. we are definitely not "good with what we have" and there's precedent that rivera actually means it. he's the type of dude who speaks in coach speak but means what he's saying. we've reached an "in case of emergency break glass" moment with jones starting at safety.

If you're under the impression that I put a lot of faith in Ron Rivera's talent evaluation and depth chart building skills, I can assure you that's not the case.

For the record, Jones played 43 non special teams snaps against the Bengals. Gaulden played 22.

Yeah, because football teams just love losing fans over politics.

If the Panthers were to lose any fans over the acquisition of Eric Reid, I can assure you nobody would notice or miss them. We would certainly be better on AND off the field.

Believe it or not, the team wasn't formed to make political statements. They exist to win games and make money.

I also seriously doubt that everyone in the organization leans the same way politically, and that includes the players.

Bottom Line: Any coach, GM, owner or other executive that makes a football move for any purpose outside of winning games deserves to be fired.

What the hell are you talking about? No where did imply the panthers would sign him to make a political statement. I’d like to see them sign him because I think he will help the team AND piss off some phony Patriots.

Your last paragraph also sums up why the collusion case against him and Cap will probably not end favorably for the league.

The fact that we aren't moving on Eric Reid even though he could help us win games, is a political statement.

Not when he has an ongoing lawsuit against the league and a history of concussions.

Not to mention that Richardson isn't in charge anymore. It's Tepper.

Kaepernick? Maybe. That's far from guaranteed. His lawyer made some big blustery promises about someone turning "state's evidence" on the league a while back. That never happened.

Of the two though, Reid has the far weaker case. Loads of other safeties took forever to get contracts this offseason (some still haven't) so you'd have to argue with a bunch of teams agreed to be weak at a certain position just to keep one guy from getting a job. That's pretty thin  Throw in Reid's concussion history and it gets even worse.

Jones isn't starting because of "intangibles". He's starting because the guy who was in front of him is out for the season.

Starting Jones was never in the plans but stuff happens. He'll likely end up ceding the role to Rashaan Gaulden anyway once the coaches feel he's ready.

For now, maybe there are guys that think Jones should be benched. There may also be guys who think Torrey Smith should be benched. Both of them would have a good argument.

Regardless, you don't say that sort of thing in public, especially not right after your head coach just said "we're good with what we have".

Except that Rivera has shown repeatedly an unwillingness to adapt and adjust until backed into a corner. Rivera says we are good with what he have because we can win in spite of our secondary. A better coach would welcome new talent and an upgrade over a ST player forced into playing safety.

knock off the political crap or i'll start swinging.

btw....if you report political crap and then participate in the discussion, you're just as bad as those you report and i'm just as likely to ban you as I am anyone else for starting it or taking it to tinderbox levels.

report and walk away if you don't like it. it's as simple as that. understood?
