Torrey Smith wants Eric Reid on the Panthers

There’s really no plausible, relevant reason to explain Eric Reid’s unemployment, as a steaming rotation of turds masquerading as NFL safeties ushered the great Ryan Fitzpatrick into the annals of football immortality last night.

Reid (yes, healthy) would help. Tepper wouldn’t, in my view, obstruct it (he’d likely encourage it). The context clues suggest such a possibility.

Message boards are where the most remote, obscure (often fabricated) possibilities receive a full autopsy.

My guess is this topic’s already been discussed in-house, and has already been put to bed.

But, then again, I’ve seen stranger stuff happen. For example, there was this one time I saw Colin Jones playing safety.

Swing and a miss.

See, there's a difference between the feelings of players who don't work here anymore and players who do. That guy who's upset because you cut him? You don't still have to coach him.

Likewise, there's a difference between what coaches and GMs say and what other players say. You might expect a negative comment from a coach, but when it comes from a teammate, that stings.

I'm not sure if you ever played the game, but if you did these are some things you should understand.

I’m still waiting on the negative comment Torrey made....as stated at the very beginning he said he’d like for us to grab Reid DUE TO THE INJUIRES, not due to poor performance.  I’m sure if you played any form of organized sports you have the self awareness to realize when you are NOT helping the team,  cutting Smith, rescinding Norman’s tag etc played a big role in the locker room  hence why we had such poor seasons following those players being cut etc.

guys acting like he came for a team captain or something

You realize this isn't Madden, right?  There's this thing called "team chemistry". The coaches still have to coach these guys and teammates have to see each other in the locker room.

But hey, if you're not concerned about player feelings, then that whole thing about how Steve Smith got released shouldn't have been a big deal to you, right?

Just chiming in real quick then will get back to reading the thread momentarily.  All I know is that this will be a long and painful two-week break if we stand pat and do nothing with the safety position.  Reid, Thomas, Ronnie fugin Lott, I don’t care.

I'm convinced that Mo-Ron will do nothing as widely anticipated, yet he’ll just patronize everyone with eyes and a halfway functioning brain who have watched the struggles in the secondary this season by saying we’re fine.  We’re not fine.  And doing nothing to address such a glaring weakness gives him no excuse when we are torched by OBJ next game.

Torry is so good at wide receiver that he feels he can handle general manager too....er wait....

What is really funny is the fan base is discussing do we need to go find a new WR, a REAL deep threat, one that actually catches the ball more than Ginn did.

I wonder how many games his defenders are going to rally for him.  First it was preseason, now three games in....it's like Matt Kalil all over.

no poo. if colin jones reacted to this in a way that upset team chemistry then that's 100% a colin jones problem. he doesn't belong on the field. just be happy that you'd get to stay on the roster imo

If Colin Jones or any other player came to me and said "you know I'm not very good, you should bench me" I'd probably cut him.

Most guys in backup roles would give their left nut for a starting job. Any player who isn't competitive for whatever he can get is in the wrong business.

Lets say Reid is brought in and he doesn't play to everyone's expectations then what. His contract will possibly take most or half of the cap money we have now that was invested in him because he most likely will not play with a cheap contract.

I wouldn't be too worried about Reid playing poorly.

I'd worry a lot about him getting injured.

what if colin jones or any other player was literally the worst player on the field by far every time he got an opportunity to play meaningful snaps. would you cut him then?

i think the impact on team chemistry (something i do generally value) is being overstated here a bit. and without being in the locker room we can't really know that smith's comments are any more detrimental than say...a head coach who puts bad players in position to fail because of their "intangibles." im sure that appeals to some people but at the same time it clearly doesn't appeal to torrey smith (let's ignore for the moment that smith has a huge blind spot here in that his situation isn't all that different from colin jones). i really doubt smith is alone here. i can't imagine bradberry and jackson are happy to see jones back there, regardless of whatever "grit" he brings.

Jones isn't starting because of "intangibles". He's starting because the guy who was in front of him is out for the season.

Starting Jones was never in the plans but stuff happens. He'll likely end up ceding the role to Rashaan Gaulden anyway once the coaches feel he's ready.

For now, maybe there are guys that think Jones should be benched. There may also be guys who think Torrey Smith should be benched. Both of them would have a good argument.

Regardless, you don't say that sort of thing in public, especially not right after your head coach just said "we're good with what we have".
