Lack of Deep Threats

We need to get Moore more involved. Smith isn't a deep threat anymore. He's basically Cotchery with below average hands at this point.

And if we're looking for a Cotchery at this point, I think J. Wright is a much, much better choice.  That dude has been pretty clutch for us.

Other than Samuel being out,  some of this probably has something to do with our offensive line injuries.  I think one of the reasons why the O-line has looked good is because Norv is calling plays to help them be successful while they are still learning. Those long deep route take a long time to develop. I will take the dink and dunk short passes and an effective run game over the deep long passes until the offense develops into being ready to doing this.

The short/intermediate plays are where it's at anyway. Our offense was garbage as all poo when we just threw it deep.

You need to set it up so the fundamentally low % play that it is increases dramatically so that it isn't just an automatic waste. Plus our fast WRs are injured or can't catch anyway. Rather throw the ball to CMC or a mid range route that someone is going to actually catch.

We shouldve snatched up Desean Jackson the moment he left the Eagles. Pretty much no excuse,  exactly the type of player Cam couldve used in 2014 and beyond.  A sure handed deep elite deep threat who also killed it at KR / PR.

We actually couldve drafted Allen Robinson or Jarvis Landry instead of Kelvin in the 2014 draft AND picked up Desean Jackson that offseason. Imagine how different 2015 mightve been with elite WRs

Has there been any word at all on Samuel?

Not much, but it's not that big a deal I don't think.

My guess, they are taking it slow with him since we have the early bye, and should have gone 2-1 in those first three games.  Guessing he will be "backing up" Torrey, with a good chance to see equal snaps in week 5.

I'm not disagreeing with you or trying to jump to conclusions, but as far as if it's a "big deal" I guess that depends on how you look at it. We haven't exactly been having a good amount of luck with drafting WR's lately. KB is gone, and Funchess is a little inconsistent to put it kindly. I really hope DJ Moore proves to be the real thing.

I was referring to the heart procedure...not our WR standing.

That said, Funchess has played pretty well for a 2nd round pick, Kelvin is still in the league, Samuel looks great if he can stay upright, we have Ian Thomas making plays, CMC being the best receiver on the team right now, a young explosive WR that doesn't need to be rushed to the field, a borderline HOF TE injured, and we throw the ball less than most teams with a franchise QB.

As to our WR/pass catching depth...I'm not concerned about that at all....personally.

Kelvin is unequivocally a bust unless he pulls a full 180, and this is coming from someone who vehemently defended him tooth and nail at one point.

Funch has shown flashes but he is rapidly reaching a point where we can no longer accept glaring inconsistencies from a player of his caliber.

CMC is clearly talented as a receiver, but as he showed against Cincy, he is a definite threat on the ground and getting him going there should be the top priority so we can give Cam breathing room.

Our WR corps is an improvement over last year, but that is considering that at one point we were starting practice squad players. Looks like we won't agree here, and that's fine. If Samuel and Byrd return soon and stay healthy for the rest of the season we are talking a different story. But right now we are still seeing instances of self inflicted wounds with the dropped passes, and in this division the way these teams are playing, that cannot continue.

We likely won't agree...like you said, and I 100% do not agree that Kelvin is a bust. Is he the player we hoped we were getting at the end of the 1st round?  No, but he's not a bust.  He will finish his 5th year completely losing 1 to injury, and have over 3000 yards, with likely 22-26 TD's.  I'm not nearly as much of a fan of his as I once was, but he's not a bust in my books.

The Panther receivers have always been a little goofy unless you have Moose and Smith back there, and we have always run somewhat of a conservative run first defense here...but this years stable is the best we have fielded in some time, and Samuel will be coming back.
