Opinions...will they break down and sign a decent safety

At the very least, we need another safety on the active roster for depth.  Adams, Gaulden & Jones as the only safeties on the 53 OR the PS (no matter what they're calling Cole Luke these days), is not sustainable.  At a MINIMUM we need Southward who at least was with the team all training camp so should have good rapport / comms with Adams.

But really, this feels like a special team/season.  It would be great to fill a pretty obvious weakness with a player who has more upside than Jones.  We have the time to do it, and at least a little bit of cap space.  I'd love to see us bring in Reid or Earl Thomas.  Can't see it happening.  But even Mitchell or Jairus Byrd would probably be better depth than we have now.

There are zero DE out there any better than what we have. There are tons of safety's out there better than Colin Jones

And even those safeties won't be able to cover a guy when the QB stands unmolested in the pocket for 6-7 seconds.

Rinse.

Repeat.

But at least it'll make some guys feel better, I guess?

One could argue that there's really only one true decent safety out there to sign, and he comes with the controversy.

I think our best play is to leverage our tradeable guys (Vernon Butler, CAP, and David Mayo) and future picks to talk someone else out of someone that is already contributing.

If neither of those scenarios are the route we take, then you're looking at, in this order:

1. This is fine. Everything is fine.gif

2. Elevating PS guy to gradually plug and play

3. Rolling the dice on another couch guy or a young guy on someone's PS that could contribute. I'd say someone like Quin Blanding, Dean Marlowe, Treston Decoud, C.J. Reavis, and Kai Nacua.

I want to say that I hope so, but the reality is that I've given up hope on addressing the safety positions. It'll almost certainly go like this - we'll say that we want to give Gauldin more opportunities and then we'll trot Colin Jones right back out there.

Seems that way, which is crazy, and I'm ultimately a homer for most of the decisions this team makes.

I truly don't think Gaulden is ready, and I understand the coaches' decision on that.  He looked lost to me on the plays he was out there yesterday.

However... Jones is not the answer either.  If we're not going to let Gaulden play through the learning curve, we got to sign someone.  Which seems like the best option

Again there is nothing we can do to fix the pass rush, we can fix safety an area that would help the DE,DT get home by covering better than Colin.

I'd think its a no brainer to look at Mike Mitchell, very physical and can plug and play basically.  Now would be the time to sign him to give him 2 weeks to catch up to speed on our defense.  He loved playing here before, you'd think he'd be itching to get back.

LIke, we're not gonna freak out about 1 or 2 spots on a 53 man roster when we're 2-1 and have played pretty well thus far. Honestly, with the way our corners have been playing we should experiment with playing a little more man-free with three linebackers on the field, especially after TD gets back.
