We're 2 - 1 and our Defense

...is ranked 19th in the league in yards  allowed.  They were again suspect yesterday but stepped up when it was needed the most.  Going forward, we need to figure out how to put more pressure on the QB and address the safety position!   I like that they started to blitz more in the second half, we should see more of that.

In our defense, no pun intended, we have gone up against solid offenses the past two weeks. Even though we have looked sloppy, I feel they will come along in time.

Atlanta was without their starting RB and still ran for over 100 yards for the first time in 23 games or something. Cincy was without their starting RB and AJ Green went out injured yesterday when Cincy was matching Carolina's drives. I dare say this game may have been a little different had Mixon and Green both played 4 quarters.

Everyone was worried about o-line and confident the defense would keep us in games

Turns out Matsko has worked miracles and Washington/Rivera haven’t got their crap together yet

This happens every year.  Whatever we are most worried about, it's the opposite.

Coleman is better than Freeman, and especially against us in terms of how we matchup—we’ve always had bigger problems with shifty outside runners than up the gut power runners (and i know Freeman isn’t a power back and is shifty himself but his style is more up the middle than Coleman). Not worried about our run defense despite that horrible game.

Coleman vs. Freeman is an opinion we differ on. And I'm not that worried about the run D, either, but Atlanta's O-line had little problem getting to the second level against the Panther front 7.

But the back end of the Panther D is my concern.

Containment has been a big issue the last two weeks, both Ryan and dalton made huge plays outside the pocket the last two games. Gotta clean that up ASAP

That might be one of the things Obada is still learning.

The older vets though don't really have that excuse.

Could be but

..,,Remember comparing offensive weapons., the Panthers had an all pro TE and ever absent but fast receivers Byrd and Samuel out as well  who is to say that Bengals defense could have had them

i am much more concerned , as I’m sure you are as well, about the safety position then anything else particularly playing the Saints, Falcons and the NFC East

    • If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
