Turner Made a Clear Effort to Make a Point - It Worked... But I Still Didn't Like It

Long story short... the tape is out there of CMC having a monster game without being utilized in the passing game, teams have to prepare for him as a legit RB now... I never want to see another game like that again, he MUST be utilized in the passing game and make defense account for him on each and every play to open up the rest of the offense.

Okay... now bash me for being a "bad fan" for complaining after we won by double digits, I'm clearly a terrible fan..........

Why wouldn't you want to see another game of CMC rushing for 180+ yds??  Especially when it results in a Panthers W??

Teams already are fully aware that CMC must be accounted for anytime he's on the field....if anything, we just made it even more difficult for teams on our upcoming schedule after his rushing performance yesterday.  He's producing (other than TD's) and even though he's lacking TD's right now, he's being used as a decoy is almost just as good.

I just think it comes down to each game plan/opponent being different.  Take what the defense is giving you and stick with what's working.  I see no issues here and am excited to see what CMC does the rest of the season!

Norv called a very smart game.

“21 Pony”—McCaffery / Anderson dual back set, with 22 motioned from end to back, 80 offset as lead blocker. This was used just enough, and at just the right time. (Led to Anderson’s misdirection screen TD). Superb call. Great personnel utilization.

Kind of wish we would have had this type of chess playing mentality going into SB 50.

Oh don't we all.

Norv is a revelation. I'm so thrilled watching him change things up week to week and see him exploit weaknesses in an opponent.

I keep telling myself to just enjoy the present and avoid all the what ifs and what could have beens.  But it's a bit tough.

Norv seems like he is having a ball with these weapons, Cam, CMC, his working relationship with Ron.  It's got to bode well for us if Norv is having fun with his job and getting to be creative!  Can't wait to watch what's ahead!!

It's called taking what the defense gives you and the run was there all game so they did it. McCaffrey was tearing up the Falcons in the pass game last week so they kept doing it. It's great to have a weapon that can do both.

Yes. Despite what works well in Madden I think it’s still a run first league.  We ran and it worked. Then it kept working...   So the only reason to abandon the run is to have a balanced looking stat sheet in the box score?

Spot on. What about that stiffarm coming through the tackles?!? He put son on his back! His NFL transition is a thing of beauty. He couldn't do that last year. He beasted.

Am I the only one who felt that there was a clear and concerted effort to NOT pass the ball to CMC throughout most of this game?

He only had 2 catches on 2 targets, and I'm pretty sure they were both very late in the game if I remember correctly.

Now I get it, they wanted to put tape out there that showed we don't NEED to pass the ball to him 10+ times a game to be dangerous, and it worked... but at the same time I don't think anyone could say that right now he is still the most dangerous weapon in our passing game (even if he's just a decoy).

I don't think he really even ran many (any) routes during the first 3 quarters, which honestly I felt was a way to keep Cam from checking it down to him a bunch of times, and while it worked, I didn't like it as just the threat of him out there catching passes changes the way a defense attacks our offense and because of that I don't think we should ever go a quarter without him getting a couple targets in the passing game.

I was thinking the same thing in regards to limited targets. Listen to McCaffery’s presser.  He mentions Cincy was trying to take all the underneath routes away and making him a focal point in the passing game. Guess it back fired, Cam had several longer throws down field and Christian gashed them In the run game.

On a side note: I think Moore contributed as a decoy for Christian on those motion plays in the backfield. Moore only got one screen pass thrown his way but If you look at the long run by Christian, Moore motioned left and McCaffery took the hand off to the right. Moore had a couple players following his direction that were taken out of the play. Good design by Norv.

That was gonna be my post. Don't want to see your 'too small' RB rack up almost 200 yds. rushing?

I get your point but a certain number of passes or runs for one player isn't essential in order to keep a D honest, and 28 rushing attempts isn't gonna wear out a 22 yr. old back. That was by far the best part of the game for me. Coming into the season we had an OL that had performed poorly in the run blocking dept, and teams were doing a good job of keeping the running threat down to Cam alone. If they can continue to run the ball like that, whether it's CMC or Anderson, they're gonna be tough for defenses to handle.

I've seen a lot of Norv Turner's career in my time, and although I don't know him personally I feel fairly confident I can say this.

Turner isn't the type to alter an offensive game plan just to make a point.

If he makes a change, it's because he believes it'll help us win.

And yesterday, he was right.
