Going into the bye week - Observations and plans

Early returns on the offense are great. A little nervous how much they are leaning on McCaffrey, and maybe that's why we only see Anderson in limited action to preserve him just in case. But overall there's no way to tell how good this team is yet. Beat two bad teams at home, lost to a good division opponent on the road. Defense has looked pretty bad at times. Not going to know how good this team is until at least Week 8.

Bengals are not bad. They won their first two games against decent opponents by double digits each. This was a very important and possibly defining win for us heading into the bye.

Can we trade Khail, even Funchess... for a solid safety and/or Dlineman? I want us to make a championship run this year. Pull the trigger now.

I'm assuming you mean Matt Kalil. He's on IR and nobody would take that contract anyway. I doubt we'd trade Ryan, although it would free up a lot of money and he's a UFA this upcoming offseason.

Funchess will stick. People are down on him, but he's the entrenched veteran along side Smith and has played okay so far for us this year.

Our most tradeable players are:

Vernon Butler - Underperformer and his days are probably numbered anyways
CAP - buried on the depth chart
David Mayo - contract year, and has some good tape now in TD's absence

Otherwise, it is future picks.

Thanks. This is why I’m not GM

Wouldn't consider the Bengals a bad team....Dallas sucks

Gonna have to wait til these teams declare full blown rebuild mode before the trades heat up, Arz Is at the brink and the bills were until Minnesota just gave them life, def would call gruden up for Karl Joseph, swing a 3rd or 4th him. The 49ers are officially in offseason mode, would inquire about Taft. Texans also, but I doubt they move any of there guys until it’s official that there out the playoffs, in which at that time I’d come for honey badger or clowney. Options are def plentiful just gotta find the proper compensation

I've definitely been more encouraged with the bright spots on this team after 3 games than the negatives.

Our offensive line injuries could have seriously wrecked us, and they haven't.  Hats off to those guys and the coaches like Matsko.  Hurney and the scouts also deserve some love for signing Van Roten and pulling Chris Clark off the street.

Norv has also tailored the offense to account for the moving parts on the Oline and Cam has executed.  It seriously takes a lot to overcome replacing 2/3 of your projected Oline starters and both OT's on the fly (I don't if Amini really should count but I digress).  Everyone from the coaches to the players deserve a lot of credit for that.

The WR's haven't balled out like I thought based on preseason, but I'm hopeful that will change more as the season progresses.  Cam & CMC have more than made up for that so far.

The offense has been borderline spectacular when you consider all the injuries they have had to overcome.  If Cam continues to play like he has, eventually he will garner some well-deserved MVP talk.

The run game obviously misses TD.  Mayo is not a starter.

Obada and Donte have been revelations.  Bradberry has been incredible.

For the love of all that is holy, sign a safety!

Team has a chance to make a playoff run. However, there are four areas that concern me, one for the offense and three for the defense.

Offense lacks a consistent deep threat. I'm not sure when Samuel or Byrd will be back. If Samuel can come back before the end of October then offense can really take off.

Defensive line is unable to generate consistent pass rush, especially from the left side and I also notice that opposing teams are running stretch runs particularly to the left side of the defense as well. Peppers is an all-time great Panther but he looks done to me. He did not practice all of training camp and it shows. Horton is best served as a rotational piece. KK is a good player but he doesn't make the consistent impact that Donald and Fletcher Cox do.  He typically goes through cold and hot spells.

Nickel corner. With offenses moving their best WRs around the field, it's important to have three solid CBs. Captain Munnerlyn is a liability in coverage and I hope the team will give Corn Elder more snaps to see what he is capable of.

Safety. Mike Adams is a solid safety. He will be in position, but he might not have the speed to get there. Colin Jones should not be starting. He is special teams only or filling out at nickel. For all the talk about his speed, seems to be several steps behind his man and got beat twice for Tds yesterday. Gaulden can be a good player for us but right now the game is too fast for him and he is learning the position. Either the Panthers are willing to allow him to take his lumps or they bring in a Safety via trade or off the street. Don't waste time playing Colin Jones because he offers 0 upside.

Overall, the Panthers have the ability to mitigate some of these problem areas by guys coming back from injury or turning to younger players. They can make a deep playoff run this year, but I feel they are 1 more year away from SB aspirations.

I really think those quick passes are a byproduct of the soft zone stuff I was hinting at. Opposing WRs have been able to sink down on quick routes because our DBs are playing so far off them at the line. It is terrible sometimes.

We need a speedy safety back end is old and slow. Jones may be able to keep up but he dont even know what to do besides that.
