When I'm looking at QB's it's certainly something I look at...but not nearly the only thing.

In Cam's case, you have to take into account the %...but more important is how many times he scores, or has a direct hand in the scoring.  Cam is a machine there.

I'm starting to wonder about our deep ball this year, but maybe it's just we don't have Samuel there, and our line has been too shaky to attempt 7 step drops consistently.  Either way, I'm happy to see some positive changes to this offense.

Smith hasn't gotten open consistently on deep patterns and there's not really anybody else healthy that suits that role well.

Yesterday it looked to me like they were running Smith more on medium depth routes rather than the long ones. That might be an adjustment to what's been happening.

He caught a few. Had some drops too though.

Yeah I'm hoping samuels or Byrd can be that guy. I haven't seen anything from smith that'd scare an NFL defense.  Nothing can be done about it but every time I see ginn scoring a td I get pissed ha

Yes, several sites have been pointing out that it's been a record few weeks for QBs.  But still, the improvement in Cam's accuracy is real, due in large part to him taking what the defense gives and throwing to his checkdowns much more.

So, I think it's a both / and.  Yes QBs are on fire.  Yes Cam is improving.  Cam's accuracy may never impress outside observers.  But by keeping drives alive with some shorter stuff, I think his overall game is going to keep getting more and more impressive as he gets to be a bit more selective with some of the big plays. Going for it when it's REALLY there, not because he HAS to...

Anyone paying attention has got to be scared of him.  More weapons, a new coordinator and improvement from an already scary good QB....  Yikes, I'm glad he's on our team!

I agree, he has improved quite a bit.  Didn't imply otherwise.  When I saw this thread, I looked at the numbers, and was surprised by them.  But Cam now has open receivers and he is throwing to them.  Before at times, he seemed to be forcing it at times.  Having better receivers, and a better OC is a big part of it.

That being said, I do want to see us throw it down the field a little more, even if it causes a slight drop in completion percentage.  Saw a little of that against Cincy, and I expect to see more deep throws worked in as the season progresses.  I think Turner sees the offense as a work in progress.

From the Game book yesterday. I'm not sure how deep it had to be for them to define it as a deep pass, but at least 15 yards by this data.

  • 1st & 10 at CAR 25 (15:00 - 1st) (Shotgun) C.Newton pass incomplete deep right to T.Smith.
  • 2nd & 6 at CAR 29 (7:03 - 1st) C.Newton pass incomplete deep middle to D.Funchess.
  • 1st & 10 at CAR 36 (6:15 - 1st) (Shotgun) C.Newton pass incomplete deep left to D.Moore [C.Lawson].
  • 2nd & 10 at CAR 44 (15:00 - 2nd) (Shotgun) C.Newton pass deep left to D.Funchess to CIN 40 for 16 yards (D.Kirkpatrick).
  • 1st & 10 at CAR 37 (4:57 - 2nd) (Shotgun) C.Newton pass deep left to I.Thomas to CIN 45 for 18 yards (S.Williams).
  • 1st & 10 at CIN 46 (11:39 - 3rd) (No Huddle) C.Newton pass incomplete deep right to D.Funchess.
  • 3rd & 9 at CAR 11 (12:38 - 4th) (Shotgun) C.Newton pass deep left to D.Funchess pushed ob at CAR 31 for 20 yards (D.Kirkpatrick).

7 deep passes. 3 completions, including one to open the game. 4 targets for Funchess, 1 for Thomas, 1 for Moore and 1, yes only one for our 'deep threat', Torrey Smith. Now why might that have been? I don't have access to the game film, but I'm pretty sure the first one to Smith was an out and out drop. You'll notice we didn't attempt another deep one to him the rest of the game.
