We need a safety

I’m not overreacting or jumping. It has nothing to do with playing with picks. This isn’t a we should have drafted Antonio Brown. There were needs at S and OL and I think we made some mistakes even though we had people in for workouts. I’m not a big fan of taking project guys, especially those that don’t seem to fit (I don’t think Haynes is a 4-3 DE).

I said after the draft that I thought it was a really good draft and that I think we’ll regret some picks. It’s always that way but S and Crosby were at the top of my list. Donte and Thomas look solid as does Carter. Moore has shown flashes but it would be nice if he got the snaps like Ridley.

So I do agree with you on the Crosby pick I wanted him as well, but we also couldn’t of planned for the injuries that have happened. They thought we’d be ok, looking back wrong call. Every team makes them.

Haynes agree right now he’s not a 4-3 DE, but it obvious they view him like Addison which is working out for us. Later in the draft is all about taking chances & believing in your coaches to develop them. Which we do pretty well especially if your taking about DE’s.

The Safety thing is mind boggling to me. I’ve have always wanted to be lucky enough to have a safety like Reed, Dawkins, Taylor, Troy, Collins & most recent Jamal Adams.

Overall I got what your getting at, but this draft will probably be our best. Which is hard to be mad about.

I posted this in a previous thread, but IMO, here are our options based on looking over the other 31 NFL rosters. Reid makes the most sense, but he is clearly being shut out purposefully and the 'Hawks probably want a king's ransom for Thomas, starting with a 2nd round pick.

Here ya go....

  • Karl Joseph - Raiders: Former 1st round pick that has underwhelmed in Oakland and is on the bench. I liked him coming out and hope that a change of scenery would be great for him here in Carolina. Shouldn't cost too much to trade for him considering he's in Gruden's dog house.

  • TJ McDonald - Dolphins:  A bit of a longshot since he is oozing with talent and still in his prime. With the drafting of Minkah, and an All-Pro in Jones, McDonald is the odd guy out. Miami has a role for him and it wouldn't be cheap to land him, but McDonald would be a beast here.

  • JJ Wilcox - Jets: Solid veteran SAF that was signed late in the offseason and is mired in a deep Jets' safety unit. With Adams beasting out, perhaps we could pry Wilcox away, still leaving them with Maye/Middleton/etc.

  • Morgan Burnett - Steelers: Veteran has been solid and consistent for years. Approaching 30 and showing signs of wear, but still capable of being a good safety on a team that needs help. He's rotating in not starting for the Steelers currently, so maybe he could be had.

  • Anthony Harris /Jayron Kearse - Vikings: Would prefer Iloka after seeing how deep the Vikings' secondary is, but Iloka is playing that hybrid SAF/LB role in a 3-man rotation. That leaves two guys with potential that just need the burn. Not as proven as the vets on this list, but better than what we have with a good amount of upside.

  • Rayshawn Jenkins/Adrian Phillips - Chargers: With James stepping in immediately as a starter, there are two guys that are on the outside looking in for playing time. Both Jenkins and Phillips are young and have a lot of upside. Jenkins was a guy I liked out of The U and could thrive in our system. Phillips can play either position and is a hard worker that reminds me of how Kurt Coleman was when he got here....trying to prove everyone wrong.

I think our chance to get Earl Thomas came and went. He showed up and fuging balled today, there is just no way the Seahawks are going to deal him now. We needed to make our move while he was holding out.

I agree though that we need to find a playmaker at safety. Thing is at 2-1 with a bye week and a bad Giants team coming up, I don't think it's the time to start mortgaging our future. I say wait till the trade deadline and see if we can pluck someone looking to move on from a losing team.

!Any player from that list and the few at home would be an upgrade. I've said it before and repeat it when a player consistently shows he underperforming and you can take a Chris Clark off the street and he's a clear upgrade over our million dollar LT it's not to far fetched to think anyone of these guys would be a clear upgrade over a special teamer starting at safety.

Some of you talk about signing Reid as if it will be easy. Wasn't he asking for a big salary? At this point does he want to play or would he rather have a beef with the league?

Reid wasn’t asking for much from what I recall. People were just low balling him or just not calling his agent. Personally think we could get him for a steal now.
