He was looking at mark Barron the year we drafted luke. He talked a lot about how important it was to have a talented player back there. I’m really not sure what’s happened. I mean Ron doesn’t draft players or sign players. But you have to believe he has a significant say in the process.

also I think Ron was genuinely pissed at dg for letting josh walk. Said something like “I don’t make those calls” he’s NEVER said anything like that before.

while I understand the anger at Rivera, numerous times he’s talked about how hard it is to find consistency with the ever rotating secondary we’ve had over his coaching tenure. I think a lot of the blame needs to be towards the front office in not being able to acquire talent or the talent we have we let go because they value that front seven so much

Barron didn't really live up to his draft position, so I can't complain too much about that. Obviously they made the right choice.

On the flipside, pretty sure Charles Godfrey was still playing safety when they gave him his contract extension. Rivera tried switching him to Corner later to see if he could stick, but it didn't work.

I suppose sometimes no decision is better than the wrong decision.

Had Barron not gone before our pick Hurney would have chosen him and passed on Luke.  Let that sink in a minute.

Eh a bit of a stretch to say oh he so would have made a bad decision that he didn't make. I get he liked him but I wouldn't say that's what he would have done.

I remember it coming out that Barron was higher on the draft board.

Likewise, word was that we would have taken Laurence Maroney over DeAngelo Williams had the Patriots not traded up for him. Likewise, Hurney himself confirmed the team had David Carr rated above Julius Peppers the year they came out.

Stuff like that happens. Sometimes teams get saved from their own bad choices because somebody else makes that bad choice before they do.

They still could have gone the other way when the pic was made, but yeah.

I just don't like having a revisionist history of things that didn't happen. Draft boards or not saying something would have happened is so subjective. What ifs can be done a million times over

It's not really revisionist if it's true, though.

Every single team in the league has stories like this, some good and some bad.

It's gonna happen. You just have to hope that you have more stories where you are on the right side than the wrong one.

Amen. You use the players your given. Least we forget how absolutely bad DG was for us? He really screwed this team up. We should have contribiters from his drafts in posistions of weakness. Instead we have what 11 players out of 28 still on the roster and 5 of those are from his last draft. Like fuuuuuuuuu that's some shitty work.

I’d say that’s pretty normal for four years of drafting for any team. I think dg ran this team better than anyone we’ve had in the past but he really fuged up with josh and Matt. I can kind of understand the Matt signing because we had fuging nobody for left tackle and the league is just dry for talented tackles. Moton looks like a home run pick. I don’t think he fuged this team up though. What he inherited was a fuged up team. He left us in decent shape.

Don’t forget he actually nailed LT when he signed Oher. Also, he would have probably left us in better shape had JR not intervened. We’ve got decent money tied up in a suspended, past-his-prime LB that will probably play 3 more years and and aging TE that can’t walk.

Nope. That’s not the Panthers style.

Green will get nothing.

Instead Dalton will get injured in the first quarter and their back up QB will rush for 100 yards and a TD. Rivera will be mind blown and spy/blitz only to have him pass for 300 yards and two more TDs to their 3rd string WR. Their 2nd string HB will have close to 100 yards. At his point the Bengals will be close or on top and Rivera will have zero timeouts in the 4th trying desperately to run out that dreaded clock. Gano then either misses the FG, the offense doesn’t get close enough or the Bengals score and ‘we’re still a good team because we almost come away with the win...if only’ is the excuse for the week.

THAT is Panther losing style.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
