Any Chance Texans Would Trade Clowney?

Blockbuster deals like this are not the norm in the NFL, especially this early in the season, and for such an important piece to a team's roster. If Houston keeps losing over the next few weeks and Carolina's pass rush continues to look like hot garbage, could a deal be struck?

Clowney, though oft-injured, did play a healthy 2017 season and is only 25 years old. He is a soon-to-be-FA, so we would have to re-up his contract for a long-term deal..... probably in that Danielle Hunter realm (5 year / $72M).  Clowney is miscast in the 34 defense, and would thrive and feast in a 4-3, IMO.

It would cost us our 1st rounder in '19 + something...maybe a 3rd round pick or future 3rd. If Houston is unclear of where Clowney fits into their future or doesn't have any intention of re-signing him, I think this would be a very wise decision for us. We should be using our first rounder on a DE anyway, so instead, we get a former #1 pick. We get a comp pick for Norwell in the third round next year, so that almost washes away the 3rd rounder we are sending in the deal. We cut Torrey and free up $5M to add to our '18 cap.

After the 2018 season, Addison is the only DE worth a sh*t on this roster, and he will be a ripe 32 at the start of the season. We are sitting at $27M in cap space and still need a SAF and probably OLB but, landing Clowney would eliminate a huge need that has been hovering over this franchise for many a year. Bringing the Rock Hill native and ex-Gamecock back to the Carolinas would be huge for him too, IMO.

Crazy pipe dream?  Nah, pass?  Hmmm.....potentially doable?

Trade a 1st and 3rd for someone you can get as a FA? Why do that?

I just have this feeling that our current roster of DEs are not going to cut the mustard for 16+ games, and would love to bring Clowney aboard for this season. It also avoids competition in FA battling other hungry teams. I'd prefer not to give up assets vs. signing someone, but sometimes you have to secure the asset to avoid a pissing match with other teams with more dinero.

    • Same... With the personnel the Niners had, that defense could have been historically good in the right hands. Under Wilks they were certainly good, they didn't quite rise to that level. Honestly, I see Wilks kinda like I see Rivera: fantastic person, decent head coach. Skill wise, phenomenal DB coach, so-so DC. His greatest strength is his leadership. Hard to find many better in that department. In the Xs and Os / execution area though, not as good. Bottom Line: Wilks is the sort of coach that needs a staff that excels in those aspects of the game where he's weaker. But, like Rivera, I don't know that he scouts assistants very well. That as much as anything might be why he's not in the NFL now.
    • Clearly the best outcome for us is a Giants W. A spot or two difference in the 4th round is inconsequential. Just look at the trade value charts. A spot or two at the top of the 1st means a LOT. A spot or two in the mid-rounds? Virtually nothing.
    • Agree. I don't think I have ever heard him say anything positive, at any time, about the Panthers. Best expectation is no mention at all.
