The 2 worst teams in the league have former Panther coordinators as their coaches

His record would be even better if he didn't coach in the hardest division in football.

That's really only the last couple years that it's been like that, but I'm in total agreement that Ron is a much better coach than fans and especially the huddle give him credit for.

RR is a better than average coach but he has 2 glaring weaknesses that are infuriating to the Huddle.

1. His unwillingness to start a more talented player unless injury demands it

2. Going into prevent defense halfway into the 3rd quarter up by 3 when the game isn't close to being over.

Usually those are the 2 things you are going to hear the Huddle bitch about most.

Arizona is a mess right now, but that's a bit to be expected. New head coach means new system with new coordinators and that takes some time to gel.

Meanwhile, in Cleveland, Browns fans are for the first time experiencing jealousy because the Bills make them look like SB contenders. That Buffalo situation is just... damn.

What you can take from this is how frikkin' hard it is to win as a new HC in the NFL. Ask Jon Gruden right about now...

Excepting the rare, rare, rare retirement of a head coach, just about every single one will be taking over not just a team that tanked last year, but probably one that bottomed out over the last three years. Many inherit teams with salary cap problems or ones that have been starving their way back from salary cap overindulgence that their star players wouldn't make second string on many other teams.

First time coaches dropped into these situations generally flounder. Good ones can grind something out and bring the team back to respectability, really good ones can make them semi-regular playoff teams and excellent ones can build champions. That last group has about, oh, three members working as HCs right now.

Guys like Rivera fall into the second group and have a high market value. Sometimes it's a lightning in a bottle thing and they can't make the magic happen with the next team. John Fox was able to make the Panthers relevant for a while, then made the Broncos relevant again (with that turd-sniffing frat boy Elway taking all the credit) and then ran into the Chicago Bears who were completely beyond redemption. Even a guy who makes zeros into heroes eventually runs out of magic.

Yeah, Rivera's coaching tree has yet to bear any fruit. It did look mighty good at the end of last season as McDermott (sp?) took the Bills to the playoffs for the first time in this millennium. That amazing result probably got Wilks the job with Arizona. The  Bills came back to the frozen sod of forgotten upstate New York this season with the realization that basically no good players really want to live or play there. And in Arizona, a state known for its high retiree population, Wilks showed up and saw about five players who weren't eligible for senior citizen discounts on his team.

Both guys are, however, cashing paychecks bigger than you or I, and probably have at least two to three years of job security before they get run out of town.

I mean this division has had both Matt Ryan and Drew Brees in it then entire time he's been coaching the Panthers. What other coach/team has won the division more or even equal to Rivera/The Panthers with 2 top 10 QBs in their division?

AFC North had 3 playoff teams with Big Ben, Flacco and Dalton all when they were playing great. NFC West has had Wilson, Kap(I know but he was really good a couple years) and Palmer. AFC West with Reid coached Smith, Manning and Rivers. A few different divisions have had their run at the top the last 7 or 8 years.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but Rivera has the ability to make his assistant coaches look better than they are. Especially on defense. The man has and will always be a defensive guru. This makes life easier on both sides of the ball and makes his coaches look like they know what they are doing, even when they may not (see Chud in 2011 and 2012 or Shula in 2015 or why we can just keep inserting defensive coordinators into place after losing one after another the past few years). Rivera is like Wade Phillips. He may never get it done as a head coach (maybe I'm wrong) but people will fight over him to run their defense until he decides he is done. We are seeing the growing pains of mediocre defensive coordinators put into the position to lead when they were inflated at a lower position and thus not ready to handle additional demands. My two cents.

new head coaches inherit shitty jobs and the state of that shitshow and their ability to find a QB basically decides their fate.

the Bills have been terrible for a long time and even experienced like Rex Ryan couldn't do it.

The Cardinals can't even claim to be rebuilding yet because they're still on the way down but they do have a rookie QB.

The Rams and Eagles were teams that had been down for long enough to accumulate talent and rise back pretty quickly with a young QB, great play caller and a couple studs on each  of the lines.
