Smitty the Underachiever

Sounds just like what most of the posters have been saying already... Steve Smith is my favorite player, and it sucks seeing him have season like this. Honestly I think we would be better off with Matt Moore at QB at this point because I'm confident he can make better throws than what Jake has so far this season.

Please don't leave us Smith, it's not your fault.

I did hear Smith say he was never going to leave the panthers and wanted his whole career to be here, he even said he wanted to be the first panther in the hall of fame. Of course I think he said this quite a while ago.

That article doesn't even talk about Smith underachieving, but it's in the title. Underachieving would imply that Smith himself is not playing up to his ability. Not that he looks bad because of the talent surrounding him. Obviously that's a big part of the issue with his poor numbers and low involvement this year, but it didn't talk about how Smith isn't playing up to his ability either.... which is the other half of it.

it just seems the FOX wont pull Moose and put in Moore or Jarrett to see what will happen. I think Moose should be in on obvious run plays and then let the young guys spread the field.

Or how about DESIGN and USE a 3WR set????

So basically you're saying we should be more predictable?

Yeah, it's all Jakes fault. Steve Smith has been open on almost every play...oh wait, no he hasn't. He was against Atlanta because he was mostly single covered and Jake threw it to him... and still got blamed for the loss.

Jake's biggest problem is that he keeps on throwing it to Smith whether he's open or not. Why you ask? Because if everybody is covered, he still believes Smith can make a play when nobody else can. The only thing I blame Jake for is not throwing the ball away, because there is no other option most of the time uness he just tucks it an runs.

It would be great to have a #2 to help with this... (on top of a little blocking)

Bingo! Until somebody else steps up and makes some plays in the passing game, Smith will continue to be double and triple covered. It can't be the TE's all the time either, although I am glad they're making some plays. The truth is that Smith is the only WR we have that can stretch the field and everybody on the schedule knows it.

I'm of the opinion that different play calling will also stretch the field without necessarily having to throw deep bawls. But we just aren't seeing it.

I think Jaws said it best on PTI on monday.

All we do is run typical routes for Smith and hopes he gets open with 3 guys covering him. Why not be creative and motion him into slants and natural picks like most good teams do. Once he gets the ball with nobody on his back he can make magic happen.

It's also sad to see our starting QB try to force him the ball with 3 people on him. That just makes the opposing defense laugh because they are triple teaming him and Jake still looks for him, so they're doing everything right and Delhomme is doing everything wrong.
