Graham Gano

It kind of went unnoticed that he easily converted a 54 yard FG against the Falcons.  This is  significant, because last year, Rivera often elected to punt than try anything that was more than a 50 yard field goal.  It had to do with lack of confidence in Gano who had only one attempt of 50+ yds in 2017 and missed it.  We will need him and I hope this is a positive sign that he will be better this season.

Gano had a bad 2016 season but so did most of the team. He was solid last season and seems solid in 2018. Only knock I have on Gano is the Panthers kept him over Butker who would have been way cheaper in the short term, and probably the answer at kicker for 15 years. I can see why they didn't trust a rookie kicker with a playoff ready roster though.

The thing everyone - including Rivera - needs to keep in mind is that overall, kickers only average about 60% on field goals of more than 50 yards.  It's just barely better than a coin flip.

Gano is a fine kicker, and you can't stop giving him chances because you lose on a coin flip once.

He struck that ball beautifully. Ugh! Rivera's decision in the Philly game last year.... What in the absolute fug was that? If you think about it, 3 points before the half there could've made all the difference in that game. That game propelled the Eagles on to win the Super Bowl. If we win that game and go 13-3 last season could've been a completely different story.

Call me crazy, but I don't think Gano had any lack of confidence. Where is that tale coming from?

I was referring to Rivera's lack of confidence in not letting him attempt but 1 field goal of more than 50 yards.

Oh, OK. I still think it would be odd for Rivera to lose confidence after one measly kick. I just thought it was Rivera being Rivera---you know, relying on his defense...

Gano also had surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot early in 2017. Was in a full leg cast at the beginning of last year. I would think that takes some time to get back into form when the slightest change in mechanics can throw off a kicker dramatically. Regardless, he still went on to have the best FG kicking % in the league for the regular season.
