Do you think the Panthers will pick up Vernon Butler's 5th year option

Big Vern appears to just be... big. If he were on any other team, we wouldn't even notice him rotating into the game. He's not terrible, but he's not a guy that gives you anything that an off the street FA DT could.

For the draft position, the roster spot and the cast of defenders surrounding him, you'd just have to expect more. He's been lackluster and you've got to ask, "Would you rather just have two Kyle Loves than Kyle and Vern?" At least Love seems motivated to be on the field.

DT isn't even close to a worry for the team, but I just coudn't see, at this point, making much of an effort to get that extra year on the rookie contract. If he doesn't somehow catch fire before season's end, I'd probably let him go.

Good points. Butler seem ok as rotational player, but smart teams don't (or shouldn't) use 1st round picks for role players. The Panthers were coming off of a Super Bowl appearance when they chose him. First round choices should at worst be solid starters,; not regularly out performed by undrafted FA's like Kyle Love (who has been a great pickup BTW)

On the surface it sounds crazy to cut a 2016 1st round draft choice at the end of his 3rd year. But, I could understand the reasoning if such a move were made.  Would the team (the D-line in particular) be that much worse in 2019 if Butler wasn't on the team? His 2019 cap hit is only 2,671,618...which is the same as his dead cap hit.

If the team had a more promising/equally player on the roster or could acquire one through the draft, FA, at a reasonable cost, I think releasing him might be the best option.

I think the only reason to sign him to that extra year is if a team called and was interested in trading for him. Like I said, he isn't bad at the position and he could be an upgrade for some teams, but right now he's just a guy who gives KK or Poe a rest, along with giving a rest to the opposing center and guard.

Gettlemagic is lingering like a wet fart.

Let me try and say this another way. Hurbey had us headed to hell and Gettleman was brought in to right the ship, not steer us to the promise land. That is going to take years, 2015 was a lot of luck, evidenced by nothing close to resembling that team since Cam was drafted.

Yep---

Normans replaceable, I can replace him with Bradberry Worley and Sanchez,..

Smiths garbage... I can replace him with KB,...

Meangelo he got it right,..ha.

Ginn was lights out for us,.. so Ill let him walk because 3 million is too much,.. and I will sign Sheppard who costs 3.5 million,...

Blindside is injured, he was just average,.. so I will go get a 1st round tackle that no one wants that happens to have a brother here,.. and I will fug our cap space for 3 years,.... but he sucks,.. sucked before and got released, and somehow our big contract and his brother was supposed to fix him?

Let me pull a fast one on everyone and draft Shaq and Butler,.. no one will see it coming!

Draft is deeper than one round bud

KK, Trai, Bradberry, Samuel, Moton, Klein, Daryl Williams, Funch, Armah, Butker

All of those guys are solid NFL players to studs

So you think a 20% hit ratio on first round (for obvious reasons the most important) picks is acceptable?

Shaq, Star, and CMC were all worthy of first round picks. Argument could be made for Kelvin as well as that knee injury really messed him up. Vernon was talented enough to be a first rounder.

I don't hate any of those picks. But you're missing the point. Being a GM is more than just hitting on first round picks, otherwise Hurney would be one of the greatest GMs of all time.
