Do you think the Panthers will pick up Vernon Butler's 5th year option

Member when we picked up a DT 1st round of a draft to provide depth and he couldn’t even manage to do that. I member.

Shaq and Butler were both extreme luxury picks at positions of strength. Those types of picks require ignoring obvious weaknesses in order to take a player that you think is just too damn good to pass up. It really hurts when those types of picks don't pan out. So far, Butler looks like a straight up bust and Shaq has been fairly underwhelming IMO. He's not bad per se, but he certainly hasn't been the type of talent that you just have to have at the expense of ignoring positions of weakness.

Disagree. It's not a matter of ignoring weaknesses. It's a matter of thinking you don't have them.

Butler was taken at a time when we were extremely uncertain about keeping Short, then we kept Short and Butler stayed a backup. Part of me wonders whether Butler's attitude might have turned sour because he expected to be a starter and now he isn't.

Thompson is different. The idea behind drafting Thompson was to prepare for the twilight of Thomas Davis, only Ron refused to back down Davis's playing time even when it became pretty clear he was losing a step. To me, that's not so much a luxury pick as it is a clash between coach and GM.

To me, it's a highlight of what I believe to have been Gettleman's biggest flaw here. I think he had a bad habit of overestimating just how good our team was. He drafted as if we could just keep rolling after 2015, but we didn't. Is say he rebounded in 2017 but the jury's still out (except arguably on McCaffrey).

TD > Shaq is one of the veteran > young guys decisions I agree with. Even at TD's age and having lost a step or two, he's still just a better LB than Shaq.

Gotta disagree with you on that one.

The guy who actually makes these decisions seems to think so, though. I suspect Ron would keep Davis in the starting lineup even if he were hopping around on one leg.

Knowing Ron, he probably would. But yeah, at this point, I'm still taking TD > Shaq unless he's lost significantly more since last season which given his age is certainly possible.

Every player selected in the first round of the NFL Draft will automatically have a Fifth-Year Option added in his contract. This option cannot be separately attached to the player contract.

The option allows a team to retain a player’s rights for five years rather than the standard four, which is the bonus of selecting a player in the first round. In order to extend the contract, the team must inform the player during the period between the last regular season game of his third contract year and May 3 of the next League Year (Art. 7, Sec. 7, (a), 31).

There's been a lot of talk about whether or not the Panthers should try to retain Devin Funchess after his contract expires at seasons end. I think a decision of equal importance is what to do about Vern's contract. Devein, for all of his issues, has been the more productive player. Butler certainly hasn't lived up to his draft position in the first round. Do you guys think the FO is going to try to keep him for two more years make up their minds after the end of his 4th season?

Yes, of course. dumb question

So after this year it’s looking like we are going to have like 2 maybe 3 players left from all of Dave’s drafts?

Giants sure are looking good lol.

cant wait for this team to finally have a competent GM. I hope Tepper is serious about winning before we waste away more of Cam’s prime.
