DJ Moore's snap counts vs other 2018 WR rookies

Panthers are pretty poor at time/player management on who's on the field when.

DJ won't have any huge numbers because he won't get the play time. He will be treated just as Byrd has for the past 4 years. We rarely get to see the skillset they have. But as the first WR in the draft he will have way more peer pressure from the Org to play DJ.

We will stick with Torrey Smith and Devin Funchess because Vets. Because "scheme" bullshit. its 2018. take from everything and do what works.

I think he should get more touches, no? I mean...I get he's not an outside WR right now given his poor ability against press, but he's still insanely good from the slot and in space.

Play the man rather than wait for him to "improve." He showed his explosive ability yesterday that we need more of.

But is Smith?

The dude looked like Worley couldve blanketed him the last 2 weeks.

But Ron trots him out as the #2

Smith cant get open, cant catch, draws penalties 25yards of them yesterday, cant block

But we're worried Moore struggles in press coverage.

Just put the kid out there

DJ needs to get through Wright.  If you want Smith out you're eyeing Samuel's return.

DJ has practiced at all the WR positions, including Smith's. DJ, Wright, and Funchess can play together with no problem. Adding Samuel to the mix may help as well.

Moore is a threat every time he has the ball in his hands so why wouldn’t you want to get the ball in his hands as much as possible?

The easiest way to accomplish that is by putting him in the slot and letting him do work. His strengths are so much better suited from the slot it’s not even close. We’re handcuffing him by lining him up outside. Just like we handcuff Cam, this organization seems to love to take playmakers and limit them.

Seems to me like having a threat like McCaffrey catching the ball out of the backfield would create a lot of opportunities for a slot guy to get open underneath.

Yep.

McCaffery can work the flats, backfield and first 5 yards. Moore has the slot so let’s say LOS-10 yard range. If only we had a legit deep threat to keep the safeties honest and keep teams from crowding those areas.

Ted Ginn would be perfect to have now. Funchess and Smith don’t scare anyone and make things more difficult than they have to be for guys like CMC and Moore. Especially when Olsen comes back, we’ll really just need our outside WR to constantly run deep routes to clear some space.

Hopefully Samuel can get healthy, doesn’t have the best hands like Ginn but he sure can get downfield in a hurry and at the very least can create some space for these other guys.

We don’t even know if he’s ok or not with press or others, he’s not on the field enough to get a proper sample size. He’s done well with the few opportunities he’s given.

His biggest opportunities have been him playing in space or from the slot and he's capitalized on those. Preseason, he struggled a lot fending off press and doesn't seem to have good technique to do such given his history in Maryland.

Doesn't mean whatsoever he shouldn't see the field as a slot receiver or taking advantage of zone coverage. Get him in space, feed him in the short-intermediate, and you'll maximize his value this year.

All fairness Samuel's preseason gives hope that his catching technique has fixed up. Showing great ability at off-body catches that I haven't seen his rookie year. Hopefully that turns out to be the norm and he could literally be our best receiver on the field.

He fought the ball multiple times this preseason and even dropped a gimme along the sidelines (It was one of the home games). That first ball he caught in Pittsburgh you could hear the smack of the ball hitting his hands watching on TV.

He’s just not confident in his hands and isn’t a natural hands catcher. That’s really not likely going to ever change since he’s already in the NFL.

At this point it is what it is and I just want him out there because we need that deep speed of his to open up other stuff.

But I will give you his route running, damn has that done a 180 from his rookie season.

The Panthers lost yesterday because our WRs kept dropping the ball and our D couldn't stop the run.  I think we still would have won despite the defense if our WRs would have not had the drops.  Perhaps Moore is the missing link and I'm all for him getting more snaps, but in Ron's defense, Moore has been completely invisible with the exception of the first preseason game.
