Norv Turner on Cam Newton: "He hides a lot of deficiencies."

Sorry, I hit enter before I was through...

So do they watch as much film as Luke or are they just not as quick as picking it up?  How much of a difference does he make on the field and would our coaches be able to make the adjustments if we didn't have Luke? Its really easy to defend a play you know is coming...or should I say its a whole lot harder to defend a play when you don't know what it is.  Not putting down our defensive coaches, I never played football and don't know how it works.  BUT when Norv said that it made me think...

Why is this being applauded like it’s some amazing breakthrough?? Just because our OC is vocally acknowledging it? That would be like if Ron came out and said Amini is a piece of sh&$ and a liability to our o-line...and then proceeded to trot him out on the field as a starter week after week. Cam still led our team in rushing in Week 1, so we’re obviously still relying on him to carry our offense. Until we see our team scheme our offense in a way where Cam can have other people step up to relieve some pressure on him, then talk is cheap.

How much does Luke bail out our coaches? I wonder if we didn't have someone like Luke, what we might look like on Defense. No one else on the defense is calling out the plays. So do they watch

I'll answer both posts lol. Luke talks with the coaches on the sidelines a lot. I'm not sure he actually stops talking when he's on the sideline. Hard to see on tv but I can see it when I'm at the game. It's a mutually beneficial relationship. Coaches have an experience Luke doesn't and Luke has a viewpoint they don't. Don't forget he has the speaker in his helmet too. Luke is not doing his Star Wars act all by himself.

I've seen Luke, Davis, and the safety all call out the play at the same time. Doesn't happen often though. Sean Payton loses sleep over Luke, devising plays that will surprise him. That was how they beat us 3 times last year. But that only goes so far and I don't see it happening so easily this year. Luke will be ready.

Luke Kuechly will be a hell of a head coach some day.

Is it though? I’m worried it’s going down the same path...more of the season will tell. Just looking at the panther oline depth chart on panthers.com scares me. Feels like 2015 was the peak Oline and we’ve slowly been sliding back to Chandler/Bell status. Still have Amini which is dumbfounding.

It’s 100000x times better.

We worried about Amini starting.  That line had 3 Amini’s (and Chandler was as bad of a player as it got).

Luke, like Cam, has the speaker in his helmet. At the whistle to start the play clock, the speaker is on. At 15 seconds, it is cut off. What seems like a lot of time, really is not. Luke gets the play call, and maybe a quick "What to look for" and that's about it. Luke then gives the call to his mates, focusing on the front 7. Whereas, Adams has the responsibility for the back 4.

Luke will look at the Offensive formation, and based on what he sees, will let the play stand as called, or make an audible. This is where Luke and his film study come into play. You may have seen Luke call a play, then the QB will change his play. And Luke will come right back and change HIS play again. This is major reason Luke is considered one of the best. His play recognition. It is dang hard to fool Luke.

Although everyone watches film. Luke probably watches more than almost anyone. Plus, he has a knack for breaking down the plays, and finding little tells that Offenses may have. All of this put together just comes naturally to him.

The DC makes his calls based on what he thinks is coming. Based off of film study, trends, and analytics. Luke makes his calls by what he sees. Just two pieces in an always moving puzzle. Not sure if that is Luke bailing out the coaches, but I would think not.

Ahhhhh.. I didn't think about that. Thank you for your post. I hope I stated it as a question and not an opinion.  Because I don't claim to be a football guy. I am just a fan that loves the fact that we have Luke AND Cam! I think its so cool to have him (with help of our coaches) call out the play before they run it. That makes me feel so much better about our coaching staff and how much they prepare for the games.  I can't wait for todays game.  I just hope we can play well and get a 2-0 start.  We are so unlucky to have the three teams in the same division and beat up on each other every year.

Thanks for your help clearing this up.
