Thread on theories for the increase in ACL injuries the past few years

A doctor who posts regularly on all of Reddit's major sports subreddits just posted his theories on why there have been an increase in ACL injuries lately. It's a great read, and if you click his profile you can read plenty of his other threads on injuries across major sports. They're all fascinating.

Makes you think that a controlled environment would only benefit us for training camp moving forward, as the hot climate in Spartanburg could definitely lead to harder surfaces and an increase in ACL injury probability.

Players are bigger and faster than ever due to modern training techniques, this impacting both variables in the force equation - those variables being mass and acceleration. ACLs are still ACLs. There's no way to make them stronger. So we're asking more from those same ligaments and it's no wonder we're seeing more injuries. It's kind of like how a modified vehicle tends to be harder on stock drivetrain components. You're asking those parts to deal with greater forces than they were designed to handle.

Good stuff. I think knowing your body and what it can and cannot do at a given time/circumstance goes a long way too. Landing, sudden jumps, sudden cuts and changes in direction etc... should be done when your body says its ok, not your mind. Especially us non athletes. We are playing a pickup game, we're feeling good and try some stuff we know we can't do or too old/out of shape to do. Listen to your body, not your mind. That prevents  many injuries

we had this morbidly obese guy, like 450 pounds easy, who was in for one thing or another. he was so fat it was assumed he wasn't going to sneak out of his bed, but sure enough he woke up confused and needing to vomit so he somehow got out of bed and shuffled towards the toilet. miraculously at the toilet (last time he'll ever walk) he finally collapses, shits himself, and starts vomiting everywhere.

when we finally found him, he was wedged between the toilet and the wall in a kneeling position. this is actually the way a lot of fat people die; they get stuck there because their guts kinda migrate downward and they lack the strength to pull themselves out. Anyway I was called in because I'm the person called in when poo Needs To Get Done. Thank god he had a gait belt on. I climbed on top of the toilet and guard rail and basically deadlifted him out of there. He slipped backwards to land on his back with his right leg getting caught in the process. Remember he was in a kneeling position? Yeah, that shin was still on the floor when he crashed backwards. It finally flopped out like a dead fish.

He then got stuck under the sink and almost suffocated because his chest fast pressed into his throat. We managed to get a sheet under him and pull him out.

Long story short he tore his acl when i pulled him up out of the space between the toilet and wall.

the only reason I'm telling you this story is because we had to send him to the zoo for an mri.

Jesus Christ. How do people let themselves go to this degree?

    • Is this the wrong place to ask?  Help me please!!   I'm taking my 12 year old to his first game.  We would like to get there early.  Are there any kid friendly tailgating areas?   Thanks in advance
    • Honestly Bryce is a conundrum right now I'm not really sure what we should do with him but I am content on him being the quarterback number one going into next season. I think we should allow him the chance to play out the season to prove that he's the quarterback he can be going into next season.  I would not waste a high draft pick on a quarterback because I'm not sure anyone in this up and coming class is as good or has the ceiling that he had with that said I wouldn't throw away the future I would bring in someone like Justin Fields to have him looking over his shoulder and give us a plan b if everything doesn't go right on a one-year deal. I think the priority right now if tepper wants to make a big splash is find a way to get Travis Hunter that would be option 1AA because he helps with both sides of the field either way whatever you need defense or offense. Make that happen and then go mostly defense the rest of the way and we're cooking.
