But he didn’t realize that. He saw himself as a member of the inner circle (Mara and Rooney) but in reality they all hated him.

What it basically says is that although Richardson had the shield there in gratitude, his fellow owners actually fought with him a lot, and it got fairly contentious.

So yeah, it kinda does.

Evidence that his much touted "league respect" might have declined in later years can be found in the LA team discussion. Richardson was reported to be pretty angry that the league didn't go the way he wanted them to on that.

The team sale is another point of contention. Darin Gantt reported that Richardson was very bitter about how things went down (the League being unwilling to accept his internal investigation idea for example). Likewise, Albert Breer has indicated that Richardson wanted to go with the highest bidder but the league ending up skewing the process toward the guy who actually build the lowest. How often does that happen in bidding contests?

Linville is correct in saying that Richardson was the point man for some unpopular things. weather that makes him a "patsy" or not is a judgement call, I suppose.

Our senior Auburn fan has a point as well, though. Given the circumstances of his departure, it wouldn't exactly be a huge surprise to suddenly start hearing owners who used to publicly praise him suddenly say "ya know, I never really liked that guy." And while maybe they didn't, there is a definite element of ass covering to that so it won't be easy to say how much of it is true.

The NFL does indeed have something of a vested interest in separating themselves from Richardson, but I suspect their preferred strategy will be to hope he becomes like Lord Voldemort. In those instances where his name does get mentioned though, a corresponding negative tidbit of info wouldn't be a surprise.
