This Fantasy Article on Curtis Samuel got me hyped as hell

Quote

Samuel is the future of NFL weaponry, about five years ahead of his time (ahead of his time in the NFL because college football is always ahead of the NFL on offensive innovations).

Samuel was a true RB/WR hybrid player in college. He ran as a true tailback for Ohio State in 2016 — not running the ball as a gimmick/gadget wide receiver taking a bunch of jet sweeps but a real single-set running back taking normal carries between the tackles and anywhere else they could get him rolling. Samuel would run one entire series as the Buckeyes’ tailback, and then on the next play or the next series he’d work as a legit wide receiver – and not as a running back who would just be a cute option lined up as a flanker in five-wide sets. No, another tailback would enter the game for OSU and Samuel would move to his usual wide receiver spot and run proper routes and make tough catches and big plays all over the field. He was a top running back in the Big Ten (771 rushing yards, eight rushing TDs, 7.9 YPC in 2016 for OSU) while simultaneously being one of the top wide receivers in the conference as well (74 catches for 865 yards and seven receiving TDs).

How many other players in the NFL today can you say that about? I think none, and not any player in the NFL today who starred at both the RB and WR positions simultaneously in a major college conference. There have been guys who have been running backs moved to wide receiver for a spell or season or vice versa, but no player I can think of in recent years truly ran the dual role, performing great at both, and with the defense never knowing where he was going to line up next, other than Samuel. Such a unique player drafted highly by the Panthers — and one year later we’re all like, “Boooorrrrring!”

Thoughts? I love it even though its got a fantasy slant.

As a Michigan State fan, I have been waiting almost 2 years for this kid to show out. This kid is one of the most exciting players I have seen in the last...good while. If he can stay healthy, which was never a problem. You all are in for a treat.

Samuel is an athlete, with speed, and he is soooo quick. What you saw this preseason, is what we are going to see all year. He is going to be a yardage machine.

He, and CmC are going to be a whole lot of fun.

Nooone that I've ever seen has a break as quick and smooth as Samuel. He never looses acceleration making his cuts and he's so far ahead of the curve for a guy who's literally learned WR for maybe 2-3 years WHILE primarily learning to be a RB.

He's an absolute candidate to be our future WR1 and I'm excited for him.

I'm curious to see how Norv will utilize CMC and Samuel. I feel like the two of them on the field together has the potential to be a match up nightmare for opposing defenses but Shula couldn't figure it out with his crayons and coloring book.

I still want to see us give a look with CMC and Samuel flanking Cam in the shotgun. Either guy can take a handoff as a RB, run a route out of the backfield, or split out wide as a WR.

There's a bit of revisionist history going on in that article with regards to Samuel's performance against Miami last year (his catching technique was awful, and he had already dropped that would-be TD pass before the Miami defender landed on his ankle), but I agree with most of what was written. He has looked a lot better this preseason than he did last year, actually snaring passes with his hands rather than basket catching everything and effectively using jab steps to get defenders to turn their hips the wrong way and create separation. I'm excited to see what he does in games that count, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him hit 50+ catches this season.

Yeah, Samuel looked really raw as a WR last year, no way around it. But, he looked greatly improved and a lot more comfortable this preseason.

What? Tavon Austin, Dexter Mccluster, Randall Cobb, Tyreke Hill, Deanthony Thomas. Those are just off the top of my head

I like Samuel but this guy is acting like he’s the first of his kind and going to revolutionize the nfl lol. As far as fantasy football goes Samuel is not worth even picking up

    • Man whether it's the Panthers or the Hornets it's crazy how many foolish talking heads there are in the local media. I just unsubscribed from locked on Hornets. Doug Branson with his cheesy mustache is an absolute clown especially when his partner isn't on. Talking about trading LaMelo because he can't win basketball games by himself with no semblance whatsoever of a legitimate Center. These YouTube personalities will say anything for a damn click.
    • I’m hoping for that exact same scenario, two seconds would be big for us. I’d hope for 3 impact players. A WR/DL/DE that can contribute like this current class would be key to our rebuild.
    • When I look at what I can find, a carryover problem from last season is our receivers are still unable to get enough separation on a consistent basis. Canales is certainly better at scheming them open, like how he sneaked out Thielen for a big play. But then he's also having Thielen running routes he frankly shouldn't be doing anymore. I feel part of the RZ issues is not really having anyone - after trading Diontae - who can make those quick cuts on a short field to give whoever is under center a wider window to throw. We also only have one guy with blazing speed in Thompkins and from what I could see, he's really used more to draw away coverage. I bring this all up because what Canales needs for sustained success - other than QB - is the other receiver pieces we'll be getting in the offseason.  Otherwise, I have to say that Canales isn't as afraid to be aggressive offensively. As others mentioned, still doesn't run the ball enough at times. Finally, I still feel his playcalls still doesn't line up with his mantra of getting rid of the ball within x amount of seconds. Maybe I count too slow. Oh, and I'm glad Canales first game after a bye looked good. I feared he'd be like Ron Rivera where we would fall flat on our faces.
