The "playoffs 4 out of 5 years" arguement is so tiresome. We made the playoffs on a fluke year where the rest of our division happened to suck just a little bit more than us. We won a playoff game against possibly the worst QB to ever start a postseason game. 2014 is in no way a success story. It's even worse when you take into consideration all the talent Dave ran off in that offseason.

The thing about the "well hold on a minute there fellars, he did more good than he did bad" argument I'm seeing right now is, Hurney brought in 3 key players whom we wouldn't have had a snowballs chance in hell of experiencing the kind of success we have had the last several years without in Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly and Greg Olsen. Yet not only does Hurney not receive a pass (he shouldn't anyway to be clear). But fans to this day still rage post about his failed picks from a decade or more ago. Meanwhile Gettleman's glaring failures from within even just the last 2 seasons are met with shoulder shrugs and a generally aloof "what can ya do? I still like him tho." sentiment.

What kind of Stockholm syndrome bullshit is this? It makes even less sense when you realize the kind of reputation Jerry Richardson rightfully so has around here now for a number of reasons not including his archiac approach to the game of football. The reality though that a number of fans just can't bring themselves to acknowledge even though it's staring them right in the face is, Jerry Richardson football is Dave Gettleman football.

Ok. Let’s call it 3 out of 5 for the sake of argument. How many years did our CURRENT GM make the playoffs and how many years was he in charge?

The reason why people defend Dave Gettleman is because he was in charge of the most successful period in team history. There's actually nothing more to it than that.

Who cares? Neither of them were all that good. Hurney 2.0 has been great so far but I'm not a Hurney nut hugger. We don't live in some vacuum where one of them HAS to be good. You're just one of those guys who for whatever reason puts Dave on a pedestal. If you think NEVER navigating a team to consecutive winning seasons is cause for praise and admiration idk what to tell you.

  That’s a really great standard for a GM that was only on the job for 5 years. And took over a team that hadn’t had a winning season in the previous 4 and a franchise that no GM has accomplished it for. Or is it the last thing to cling to. 

  Bottom line: If I said we would make the playoffs 4 of the next 5 years, with Hurney or any GM, you taking it?
