I would like to talk about this Matt Kalil situation

It always surprises me how many people don't understand that trading a player is the same as cutting a player in terms of cap impact. All that bonus money gets accelerated.

Best case scenario for us, his injuries continue to linger and we work out an injury settlement. I would say the best case is that Matt retires.

Even if he retires, it's similar to the trade scenario, all the bonus money still gets accelerated.

Ugh.

I really really hate when players have influence over roster decisions. That's one thing I absolutely hope Tepper chucks out the door.

If not for Luke, TD wouldn’t be on this team still.

I honestly don't think he cares if he ever sets foot on a football field ever again

Same. He’s so physically and mentally weak. He’ll ride out this contract and call it a career.

Honestly, give him the eight weeks of IR, trot him out to practice, give him about 45 minutes of wind sprints and see if he holds up. If not, cut him, take the cap hit and just assume that is the cost of freeing up a spot on the 53-man roster.

The cap penalty hits us if he leaves, the salary hits us AND we are penalized with bad play and having Moton looking over his shoulder.

If he doesn't come back at the end of October looking like Ahnold as the T-1 Terminator, then just let him go. Heck, the best thing that could happen is that he goes out and basically takes free pay (like Delhomme did) to be an LT, hopefully with one of our upcoming opponents.

Keeping him AND shelling out the money is just doubling down on the penalty we have for lining him up.

And I was one of those guys standing up and saying 'Give him a chance, he's been rehabbing.'

You have to wait a certain amount of time after the season is over before you can make a post-June 1st cut.

You absolutely CANNOT cut Kalil until then.  But, as you point out, if you bring him back and it still seems he can't hack it, then you IR him for the rest of the year to open up that spot.

So where do we go?

I honestly think forcing a restructure could work if the panthers were ruthless enough to do it. "Take your illgotten fortune and never play football again, or work with us and we'll send you somewhere you can compete."

And how exactly would you make this work? A restructure would mean prolonging the contract, probably for the concession of more gauranteed money up front.  This may free up a little bit of cap in the short term, but would ensure this horrific Kalil contract continues to be an abscess for longer than is needs to be.

Unfortunately, I say we just ride it out over the next 2 years.

He would have to give money back, at least to a point where a hypothetical next team could pick up some or all of the tab.

Yeah, a restructure isn't happening. Or, I should say absolutely shouldn't happen. Resturctures usually involve converting salary to bonus to free up cap space in the short-term. We absolutely don't want to do that with Kalil. In terms of forcing him to take a pay cut, we have zero leverage. He holds all the cards. We're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Making him a post June 1st cut next year is likely our best bad option.

He can only elect to “give back” non-gauranteed annual salary. His signing bonus and other gaurantees will count towards to the cap no matter what.
