REPORT: Steelers backup QBs Josh Dobbs and Landry Jones have "garnered interest" from other clubs via trade

Dobbs may be a superior athlete, but he's not a good quarterback.

There are reasons why the Steelers used a high pick on a quarterback this year despite the fact they already had both of these guys.

Was it really that high of a pick though? It was a 3rd round pick used on a QB that many thought could go in the 1st. A mid rounder for what many would consider great value. Doesn't necessarily mean anything at all regarding their QBs they had behind Ben before the draft. Dobbs is a smart kid and has serious traits and potential to develop. I wouldn't give up more than a 6th for him but I think he'd be a solid young guy to have behind Cam, and he's on cheap rookie deal for next 3 years.

Gilbert and Heinicke have been with a head spinning number of teams.  Why?  Because by your theory AND in reality...they suck!!!

The Vikings have only had one franchise QB in franchise history (four decades ago), were DESPERATE for Teddy to be the savior, then discarded him like used trash after his disastrous injury, and he just commanded a 3rd for one year on a huge salary.

No one has yet to put a more logical solution to this short and long term (by NFL standards) problem than a late pick for Dobbs.

Gilbert and Heineke aren't great either, but we don't have to give anything up to keep one of them.

Don't understand why many of you want to waste a draft pick on a trade for a backup QB just for the case that, if Cam went down, we could still lose but maybe a little more admirably.

I agree with you for the most part.  But teams in the NFL look at the success the Eagles had after losing their QB, and they think that "we can do that to".  Superbowl wins are a rare thing, and even more rare with a back up qb, but that want stop teams that think they could contend from trying.

High enough to say they didn't trust their current prospects.

The Steelers have been waiting for Jones to develop forever. He hasn't, but they were at least willing to be patient with him.

The fact that they're ready to give up on Dobbs a lot faster tells me something.

If Cam goes down I'd rather tank with GG or Heineken and get a top 5 pick.

Awful logic.  Just because Cam goes down for a game, or even half the season, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be ready when it mattered in January/February.  The Eagles even won it all with a backup.  Not to mention the need for a guy like Dobbs to take a load off Cam’s practice reps.

Dobbs has a FAR superior physical skill set, age, injury history, and salary to Bridgewater, who himself is not that good, and just commanded a 3rd for one year.  Bridgewater is a good guy but so is Dobbs, an engineering major to boot.

Pretend he didn’t go to Tennessee.

I’d offer a conditional 7th. For Dobbs. Nothing for Jones.

Steve Smith didn’t go to Tennessee.  He said on NFL Network during the combine Dobbs was the most impressive QB in the 2017 draft.

And since then, Dobbs was drafted by the Steelers and given every opportunity to beat out Landry Jones. Who the Steelers knew wasn’t the answer. And he couldn’t. Not only that, they basically admitted his lack of development by selecting a QB even earlier than Dobbs. And now he’s on the market. What anyone said at the draft doesn’t matter. What he has done since does.

This is the Steelers front office at the 2018 draft. “Crap, we gotta draft another QB this year because Josh Dobbs sucks”.  Now that’s reality.
