Saints trade 3rd round pick for Bridgewater - what would your reaction have been if Hurney did the same?

I don't agree with that sentiment in that if it's not a SB it's the same thing. Were the Panthers the same as the Browns last year? Same result. No SB.

There is no reason for the Panthers to give up a 3rd round pick for a QB. You have a franchise guy in his 20s. The Saints? Theres been talk of them drafting a QB in round 1 for the last 2 or 3 years, and now we're supposed to be upset that they spent a 3rd on a guy that we know can play in the league.

High likelihood that this trade winds up biting you guys. If he somehow turns into your next franchise QB I'll be right here to say I was wrong but I think that's quite unlikely. All we can do is wait and see, we both know where we stand...

Donning my tinfoil hat here and wondering if the Saints aren’t confident in Brees’ arm to hold up through this season.

Not sure that really qualifies as tinfoil hat material.  Brees is 39 or so.  His arm strength isn't what it use to be.  He is still a very good qb, but its not outside the realm of possibility that they wanted a insurance policy.

High likelihood in your own completely anti-Saint opinion lol. There is a chance this doesn't work out. If he's needed this year, it's worth it. If he's retained, it's worth it. If he's not and we receive a decent comp pick, it's worth it. If he's not and we receive nothing, it's a terrible move. There are more ways for this to succeed than fail.

Think it's quite obvious they wanted an insurance policy and weren't pleased with the current ones.

-Let's assume the third round pick is towards the bottom of the round. Big difference between a Browns 3rd and a contender's 3rd.

-Saints got a 6th back. Not much but it's a pick.

-Starter/competent stopgap when Brees retires, if they extend him.

-Possible comp. pick if he walks and gets paid a needy team.

It's a calculated gamble to be sure but has plenty of upside.

IMHO, the compensatory pick argument, while reasonable, is probably a bit of a red herring. The NFL holds the exact way that these picks are determined close to the vest. However, we do know the big factors are playing time, salary, and post season honors. Furthermore, the picks are limited to a total of 32 picks. Unless, Bridgewater plays a good amount, my suspicion is that he will simply be a player lost akin to any other non playing player. BTW, the compensation received by Bridgewater in a new contract by another team does not impact on the calculation.

Thus, it is my opinion that this is only a good deal for the Saints if Brees gets hurt and Bridgewater has significant playing time, which leads me to wonder again about the health of Brees or if the parameters of a longer term deal have been discussed.

If Brees has indicated this is his last year, this may not be as bad a move as some think. Personally, I think Teddy could've been had for a 5th, but maybe not. Maybe another team offered a 4th and the Saints figured, hey, we need to get this guy and he's almost certainly better than someone we could pick with a 3rd, so let's do it. Maybe the Jets bluffed and got their way. But I would've stuck to my guns and offered a 5th and took my chances.

If on the other hand, Brees hasn't indicated this is his last year, I could see this blowing up spectacularly in their faces. Not saying it will, I'm just saying the odds for that increase if this is the case.

I’d say he’s a little better, but we ain’t making the playoffs, much less the Super Bowl with Bridgewater at QB.

Bridgewater beat a good Seahawks team in the playoffs and his kicker missed a fg. He can definitely keep the ship above water. We have no evidence that Heiniken can even play quarterback in a real game. Y’all are crazy.

I don’t disagree but do you truly believe we’d have any chance to win the SB if Cam got hurt and Teddy was the backup? I don’t so it’s same result as Heineken, though with a worse draft pick...

What I think is that Teddy won’t be the reason we lose games. He might not win them like Cam will, but he won’t hold the team back. We don’t even know if Heineken can play football.

Hundley just went for a 6th lol. There's no way in hell you're getting TB for a 5th.

The comp pick shouldn't come up when discussing if this is a good or bad move...the likelihood of receiving any comp pick is low...unless Teddy plays a lot...which means they won't be getting rid of him, as Brees just had a major injury, and they will likely move on.

That said, it's not the worst trade for them (the two 1sts for an average DE this year was), but not that great either.

If Brees has told them he is ready for this to be his last season, so be it...it may work out OK.

Please don't forget just how valuable 3rd rounders can be though....the Saints got Kamara there last year.

Dude hasn't even played yet and he's average already lol.

They also drafted Garret Grayson in the 3rd to be the apparent. If Teddy stays, it's a win. If he leaves for nothing, it was terrible. It's that simple.

Yeah give up a first next year for project de and a third for a backup QB. I love it, saints are making me feel a little better about Hurney.
