Saints trade 3rd round pick for Bridgewater - what would your reaction have been if Hurney did the same?

I gotta figure they're gonna renegotiate something, and may have already discussed it.

Doesn't make much sense to give up that high a pick for a one year backup. If they're thinking of redoing a contract to make him Brees' successor, then it makes a lot more

Said it in the other thread. He's an ideal fit for their system as long as he can stay healthy.

I think it is worth noting, that while I believe a negotiation has probably already been discussed, if he leaves for starter QB money that many here believe he will command from the Saints, they'll be in line for a comp pick.

Have to believe the Saints and Bridgewater will announce a new deal soon. It makes sense for all parties if Brees has told the front office he is likely to retire after the season.

Or there's a reason they've limited Brees in the preseason.

Does anyone here think the trade has something to do with the fact the saints play us twice a year? With teddy’s Insight of norvs offense?

of course he is a quality backup, but he also provides cometetive intel.

I think it has more to do with Brees insurance. Bridgewater is a player that Payton can coach up. Also their back up is terrible.

I really doubt you recoup that with him backing up Brees.

I am shocked that the Saints would give a third round pick for a player who they hope does not play and is on a 1-year contract. There are a couple of possibilities that would make the trade more understandable:

1) perhaps there is something we do not know about Drew Brees' health or

2) they have set parameters for a longer term deal

-Let's assume the third round pick is towards the bottom of the round. Big difference between a Browns 3rd and a contender's 3rd.

-Saints got a 6th back. Not much but it's a pick.

-Starter/competent stopgap when Brees retires, if they extend him.

-Possible comp. pick if he walks and gets paid a needy team.

It's a calculated gamble to be sure but has plenty of upside.
