Is there a scenario in which we get to keep Byrd?

There are a bunch of options. For all of them I'm assuming only 2 QBs.  If 3 QBs the math gets really tricky.

1. 2 tight ends

QB 2;  RB /FB 4;  WR 6;  OL 11. TE 2.

Olsen and Thomas make the roster. Manhertz starts season on PUP, can come back in 6 weeks when hopefully we can demote an extra OL. Need a healthy TE on PS as depth. Having Armah makes this work.

2. Only 10 OL (incl Williams who is then IRed). Gives us room for an extra RB or TE in addition to 6 WRs

QB 2 / WR 6 / TE + RB + FB = 7 / OL 10

This more or less depends on either Sirles or Amini being cleared to play week 1 and / or putting Williams on short-term IR. (Cutting Amini would work too! But not likely!)

OL day 1.

Ryan, Trai, Moton, Van Roten, Sirles (wk 1 starters)

Larsen, Clausell

Matt, Amini, Daryl.

If / when we IR Daryl, it would free up a spot to bring back a guy like Mahon if he clears waivers.

This is risky, counting on injured guys like Sirles and Amini to start or be backups. But it could work.

3: Steal a spot from the defense (CB)

QB 2 / WR 6 / RB+FB+ TE 7 / OL 11

Dline 9 / LB 6 / DB 9

In this scenario I think 5 CBs and 4 safeties.  If Daryl to IR can bring back another DB.

Anyway, these are just ideas. There are reasonable ways to keep 6 WR. Think we'd be foolish not to keep Byrd.

It's going to come down to OL health and who we're most willing to risk / not risk to waivers.

The worrying thing is other teams will know our Oline situation means we'll be cutting guys we want to keep.

(Guys like Hall, Obada, Doss, Demetrius Cox, Andre Smith come to mind. Or, Mahon... AND yes possibly Byrd)

They'll be hunting our waiver wire releases. Sigh.

Not to change the subject, but  Byrd has more chance than former third rounder Daeshon Hall.  Here is why:

Cox Jr and Haynes have outplayed him.  They would be the fourth and fifth DE on the roster.

Obada can be put on the PS and not cost a PS roster spot.  That gives us access to a DE of equal talent.

I am disappointed, and I hope they know something about him that is not coming across on film.

ABOUT BYRD:  We have 2 guys with his skill set who are better (Moore, Samuel).  We have 3 veterans.  how does he play? Injury?  Not worth a jersey.  I am a Gamecock fan (my father played for SC and I was born there when he was a player) so we have loyalties to the players.  Byrd has flashed and teased, but his window in Carolina seems to have closed.  I think he makes a team somewhere, but he will not see grass here.

Can other teams pick him up off our PS like other players? Or is he untouchable since he is from the international program? If so, putting him on the PS for one more season seems like a no brainer.

As I understand it, he is untouchable this season and can be safely put on the practice squad.  And as mentioned previously, does not count against the PS total.

He can be placed on the PS in 2 ways. Either through the international program. In which he cant be claimed, but also cant be promoted. OR the normal waive and place. In which anyone has a shot at him and can be promoted at anytime.

Bill Voth wrote about Obada a few weeks ago.  My understanding is we have 3 options.

1) Keep him on 53

2) Waive him. Keep him on normal PS  meaning he could be promoted to 53 OR plucked from PS by another team. AND we would only have 10 PS slots.

3) Waive him. Keep him on PS with exemption. He can't be promoted. Can't be plucked. He's an extra 11th guy.

Note: in both scenarios 2 &3 he has to first clear waivers... Beginning to hear more chatter that he has an outside chance to make 53 if we can find a way to keep 10 Dline.
