Will DJ Moore be active week one?

He's the second most expensive WR on our entire roster, of course he'll be active.

Right now I'd say Wright and Byrd are in the most danger of either being cut or being regularly inactive. Especially if we keep Barner as a KR.

None is being cut, not with how Rivera mentioned Samuel, Moore and Byrd in post game interview

Reminder not all WRs are like 2014’s class and instant Elites. DJ Moore is more a raw guy with potential than a sure day one starting star.

Reason DJ Moore is low in productivity is the coaching staff forcing him into an outside role when his technique doesn’t warrant that yet.

He’d be fantastic from the slot and in space, but he’s not an outside guy yet. His press technique is lazy; his release is poor and that allows DBs to jam him early. Only way he wins is by beating the DB at the top of his route (he’s real good at that) but otherwise he’s a tough window to throw in and will have a DB draped on him until he fixes technique.

This plus its just preseason

Also, the WRs are set.

Funchess-Wright-Smith-Moore-Samuel (Maybe: Byrd)

We go 5 or 6.

I'd personally like to see Wright as the Z, Funchess as the X and Samuel as the Slot.  Moore gets sprinkled in slowly but surely.  Smith is a beneficial commodity but I just don't know if things fit for him right now and it's a really cuttable contract.

Funchess, Wright and Samuel should absolutely be active.

That leaves one spot you can fill with Moore, Torrey Smith...maybe Damiere Byrd but I'd call that a long shot (granted he has special teams value).

We regularly had 5 active WR last season when healthy.

He will get time in week 1.  At this point they are evaluating the other guys to finalise the roster.   I expect Moore to get a lot of playing time in final preseason game as well.

If Ron is the same ole Ron.. He will always be over cautious and play him as little as possible if any.. That's if Ron feels he is a major part of the game plan early this season..

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
