Will DJ Moore be active week one?

I'm pretty sure he will be, especially since we open at home. Ron knows the fans will want to see our first round pick!

I'm guessing it will be at the expense of Byrd or Smith. Much will depend on ST and kick return.  If Barner can handle returns Byrd likely to be inactive.

Byrd is the best return man on the team. He needs to be active. We don't need to carry 4 RBs on gameday. I only see us carrying 3. I could also see us only activating  Olsen and Thomas as our only TEs with Armah spotting.

I know it's the other side of the ball and not as sexy a position, but does anyone remember whether we kept Shaq active every week his rookie season?

Obviously there were established guys ahead of him. We had the luxury of bringing him along slowly. Moore's situation is a bit similar given our current potential depth and talent at WR.

I could dig into 2015 gamebooks... I just don't remember if Shaq played every game.

Don't forget Norv's man crush on DJ. I would imagine he's got plays drawn up just for him...

No need to go digging in the gamebooks for that. This site is great for snap counts, just google Panthers snap counts and they come right up. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/T/ThomSh01/fantasy/2015

So anyway as you can see he played in 14 games his rookie year. Some he saw as few as 9 snaps.

I can understand that.

Is that really a good reason to make a roster decision though?

I'll grant that decisions get made for reasons other than the player being the best choice. I just don't believe they should be.

Of course not but that's the reality I'm afraid.

Thanks. I use PFR quite a bit but do tend to forget they have snap counts.

Actually, I have snap data for all 2015 players in a spreadsheet... so, I could have found the data pretty easily. I'm just not at my computer...

Not sure why this is even a thing. Of course he'll play, and he'll be over Smith if need be. Moore will be with us for the next 10 years hopefully, not sure Smith is on this roster after this year. No sense in wasting snaps on a played who isn't part of your long term plans. Sound business decision.

I agree with patience for Moore, but I'm not convinced Smith is going to be all that good.

how tf do you know if Samuel is going to be any good or more importantly, stay healthy, for the regular season?

Pre season is 4 practice games that dont count, other teams dont have all their defensive starters in, coaches dont game plan very seriously for the most part.

I think Byrd will end up being inactive. As disappointing as it may be that Moore hasn't earned more snaps with the starters, Byrd hasn't gotten any snaps with the starters. I don't think they're going to keep him active just for returns since Moore, Samuel, and CMC all have return ability (could throw Barner in there too if he ends up earning RB3 over CAP).

    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
    • Well, we got our answer on Army today.
    • Not a chance the SEC could compete with the NFL.  In the large cities that are not in the Southeast, (LA, NYC, Chicago, SF) College football is an afterthought.
