That contract is a mess. The bad thing is that we could have gotten out of it after this year, but they changed it last offseason so now we have two years more of his pathetic play to deal with

Bullet probably needs to be bitten at some point, but it's gonna hurt when it happens.

Gotta say it's highly unlikely that happens this year because this is Rivera and Hurney's audition.

Man, Matt Kalil is a quandary.

We have only a limited sample of Taylor Moton as yet, but that sample came under the same control conditions as what we've seen from Kalil. And Moton unquestionably looked better.

Unless Moton suddenly looks awful (and he's guaranteed to have some tough moments as a young transitioning into arguably the hardest job on the line) it'd be pretty hard to justify sitting him down in favor of Kalil.

Kalil has said he's a left tackle, not a right one. So if he's healthy do you try and convince him otherwise? If not, are you willing to weather the firestorm that comes from putting him back at on the left spot?

And that contract? Cap wise it's a very  "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

Oy...

It’s a sunk cost. That money is gone. No reason to play him if he isn’t clearly the best option. Tell him to enjoy the view and start coming up with his next excuse article in the Spring. Maybe he can con another team.

My surprise cut is Amini. Surprise as in, I wouldn't think Ron would have the balls to cut one of his favorite players.

It would be the most logical one. Amini is trash and is hurt. Nobody would pick him up anyway so we could just bring him back when we wanted. Even if he did, we could EASILY find somebody to replace him at any time during the year instead of wasting a roster spot on him.

Amini's probably a good choice.

The expectation right up to the point he got injured was that he'd be a starter.

That is not true at all.

I can't believe so many think Torrey Smith is on the chopping block here. He's currently our number 2 receiver.

Would be crazy to give up on him this early. We don't really have any immediate use for the cap space it would clear and 5 million for a WR of his talent level is pretty much the going rate these days anyway, so its not like he's grossly overpaid.

I'd agree, but I'm not a GM or a head coach that's auditioning for a new owner.

In that circumstance, are you willing to take that cap hit?

Since it isn’t Hurney’s fault, I’d just simply ask Tepper if he wanted to throw another 7M at him to suck again. Or just cut our losses before it gets worse. Any sensible businessman is saying cut him the minute the season ends. Until then, I would treat him as a “break glass in case of emergency” player. If he gets hurt, we have to keep and pay him that 7M. I’d just as soon wash my hands of him and not take the chance. The injury guarantee is being overlooked.

Not Hurney's acquisition, but he did give him a favorable restructure.

That said, it's not so just about what it'll cost. You also have to factor in just how little cap we have right now.

Ability wise, dumping Kalil is the right call. I don't really think anybody questions that. The Dilemma comes when you see how that leaves our cap in a year when the guys in leadership really want to be competitive.

Not sure how it's going to play out, but it's a tough situation all around.

This is a myth, that Hurney did anything wrong. The original deal structured by Gettleman forced Hurneys hand there.

I bolded the part where if we didn't convert it into a signing bonus, his salary would have been 10 million more this year and would have jumped his cap hit to 9 million more for this season.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/matt-kalil-9814/

Contract Notes:
  • $13M fully guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2017 salary)
  • 2018 Option Bonus: $10M (must be exercised by 3/19/2018)
If not exercised, the $10M converts to salary, and $11M 2018 salary fully guarantees
  • $7M 2019 salary fully guarantees on the 3rd league day of 2019
  • 2017 Per Game Active Bonus: $37,500 ($600,000, 4 LTBE)
  • 2018 Per Game Active Bonus: $$50,000 ($750,000)
  • 2019 Per Game Active Bonus: $$50,000 ($750,000)
  • 2020 Per Game Active Bonus: $$50,000 ($750,000)
  • Pro Bowl: $400,000
  • $200,000 Annual De-escalator for skipping workouts

We had that debate a long time ago, but it doesn't matter. We're still stuck with a huge cap figure for a guy who's looked awful and now isn't even playing.

What do you do with that from here?

I don’t mean now. I mean sit him on the bench. Cutting him now doesn’t even save anything. I’m talking after this year. When other money becomes involved, like that 7M.

And WHY does everyone(certainly not just you) keep repeating this lie about Hurney in Kalil’s contract. That restructure was written in from the beginning. No change. The ONLY decision Hurney made was to spread the 10M option bonus over 4 years. His ONLY other option was to decline it and have all 10M count on THIS year’s cap. So he did the right thing.

And you know I think Hurney is the worst GM in the NFL. But this isn’t on him.
